Star Wars: The Clone Wars – Republic Heroes (2009) is a bridge between Seasons 1 and 2 of the animated series. While the console versions were criticized for clunky platforming, the PSP version is an interesting “scaled-down” adaptation that focuses more on a mix of lightsaber combat and twin-stick shooter mechanics.

Dual Gameplay Styles

The game splits its 30+ missions between two very different playstyles:

1. Jedi Missions (Platforming & Sabers)

  • Characters: Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, Aayla Secura, and Luminara Unduli.

  • Droid-Jacking: A core mechanic where you jump on top of enemy droids (like Droidekas or Spider Droids) to “hijack” them, using their weapons to clear obstacles or blast groups of enemies.

  • Force Powers: You use Force Push to solve puzzles and stun enemies, alongside a “snap-to” jump system intended to make platforming easier on a handheld.

2. Clone Missions (Twin-Stick Shooter)

  • Characters: Captain Rex, Commander Cody, Commander Gree, Commander Ponds, and specialized clones like Switch, Kano, and Boomer.

  • Combat: These levels play more like a top-down shooter. You use your blaster for primary fire and have a dedicated button for thermal detonators and heavy ordnance.

Secrets & Cheat Codes

The PSP version includes a “Shop” where you spend the Force Orbs you collect. You can enter codes in the Shop Menu to unlock these instantly without spending points.

Effect Cheat Code (D-Pad/Buttons)
Ultimate Lightsaber (1-Hit Kill) Right, Down, Down, Up, Left, Up, Up, Down
Big Head Mode Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Down, Up
Infinite Mini-Gun Ammo Down, Left, Right, Up, Right, Up, Left, Down
Lightsaber Throw Upgrade Left, Left, Right, Right, Up, Down, Down, Up
Spider Droid-Jak Upgrade Up, Left, Down, Left, Right, Left, Left, Left

Key Features: The “Clone Wars” Experience

  • Voice Cast: Almost all the original voice actors from the TV show reprise their roles, including Matt Lanter (Anakin), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan), and Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka).

  • Upgrade System: You can buy “Combat Upgrades” (new combos), “Droid-Jak” improvements (longer riding time), and “Cheats” (silly effects like droid dances).

  • Challenges: Each mission has “Platinum,” “Gold,” and “Silver” medals based on your score and time, encouraging you to go back and master the combat multipliers.

Short Review: Fan Service vs. Gameplay

The Good

  • Authentic Vibe: The mission intros use the same “newsreel” style as the show, making it feel like you are playing a “lost” multi-part episode.

  • Variety: Switching between the Jedi’s acrobatic combat and the Clones’ tactical shooting keeps the game from feeling too repetitive for the first few hours.

  • Unlocked Content: The ability to play as “third-stringer” Jedi like Kit Fisto and Plo Koon is a treat for hardcore Clone Wars fans.

The Bad

  • Frustrating Platforming: The “assisted jump” system often miscalculates, leading you to fall to your death even when you aim correctly.

  • Missing Co-op: Unlike the console versions, the PSP port does not support co-op, which was the primary way the game was meant to be played.

  • Long Load Times: Transitions between levels and menus can be quite sluggish on the original UMD hardware.
