Untold Legends: The Warrior’s Code (2006) is the quintessential “Dungeon Crawler” for the PSP. While the first game, Brotherhood of the Blade, was a launch title that felt a bit bare-bones, The Warrior’s Code expanded on every mechanic, adding a deeper story, a transformed class system, and an improved engine that made it one of the most polished Action RPGs on the handheld.
The Premise: The Changeling War
You play as a member of a persecuted race known as the Changelings, who possess the ability to “morph” their bodies into powerful combat forms.
-
The Villain: The tyrannical warlord Zhurag is purging the world of Changelings and non-humans.
-
The Mission: You must unite the fractured tribes, master your shifting abilities, and lead a rebellion to take back the capital city of Aven.
-
The Evolution: Unlike the first game’s generic “save the world” plot, this entry features cinematic cutscenes, voiced dialogue, and moral choices that affect NPC interactions.
Key Features: Shifting and Strategy
-
The Five Classes:
-
Guardian: The heavy tank; uses massive two-handed weapons.
-
Mercenary: Dual-wielding specialist focused on critical hits.
-
Disciple: The classic battle-mage; utilizes elemental spells.
-
Scout: Ranged specialist using bows and traps.
-
Prowler: A stealthy, fast-moving assassin.
-
-
Form Shifting: The standout mechanic. As a Changeling, you can briefly transform into a “Primal Form,” granting you massive stat boosts and unique screen-clearing attacks based on your class.
-
Essence System: You don’t just find loot; you find Essences. You can slot these into your gear to add elemental damage (Fire, Ice, Poison) or health/mana steal, allowing for a “Diablo-lite” level of customization.
-
Dynamic Combat: Introduced “Attack Chains” and “Power Attacks,” making the combat feel much more like a modern action game than the simple “button-mashing” of the first entry.
Secrets & Hidden Content
Warrior’s Code is famous for its hidden endgame rewards and specialized multiplayer modes.
The Hidden “Uber” Bosses
After completing the main campaign, you can return to specific zones (like the Wastes of Aven) to find super-bosses that drop “Legendary” tier equipment with purple item names. These are the only way to reach the level cap effectively.
Arena Mode (Multiplayer)
Aside from the 2-player Ad-Hoc Co-op campaign, the game features a dedicated Arena Mode.
-
PvP: You can duel other players to test your builds.
-
PvE: A wave-based survival mode where you can earn “Battle Tokens” to trade for unique PvP-only armor sets.
The Secret Vendor
There is a “shady dealer” who appears randomly in certain hub areas. He sells Unidentified Items (Gambling) for high gold prices. This is the primary way to find high-level jewelry and unique amulets that don’t drop from standard mobs.
Short Review: The PSP’s “Diablo II”
The Good
-
Technical Polish: The game features a much better framerate and shorter loading screens than its predecessor.
-
Deep Progression: The skill trees are branching, meaning two “Guardians” can play completely differently—one focused on defense, the other on AOE “Ground Slam” damage.
-
Atmosphere: The orchestral score and darker art direction make the world of Aven feel lived-in and dangerous.
The Bad
-
Inventory Clutter: You pick up a lot of junk. You’ll spend significant time in menus selling low-level rusty swords and managing your Essence stash.
-
Linearity: While the world looks open, the level design is essentially a series of high-fidelity “corridors.”
-
AI Teammates: In solo play, your NPC allies aren’t the brightest; they often stand in environmental hazards or target the weakest enemies first.
