Elminage II: Sousei no Megami to Unmei no Daichi (2009) is the direct sequel to Elminage Original and is widely considered by fans to be the “peak” of the series. While the first game laid the foundation, Elminage II refined the balance, expanded the world-building, and added several quality-of-life features that solidified its reputation as the best Wizardry-style dungeon crawler on the PSP.

🌍 The Plot: The Twin Goddesses

The story takes place in the world of Finus Rade, a land created by the Twin Goddesses.

  • The Conflict: A dark shadow looms over the land as ancient evil spirits attempt to seize sovereignty.

The Quest: You are tasked by the King to head into the “Labyrinth of the Goddess” to recover lost artifacts before the evil spirits can.

  • The Narrative Style: Much like the first game, the story is nonlinear. You choose which “events” to trigger and which dungeons to tackle, meaning every player’s journey through the lore is slightly different.

What’s New in Elminage II?

If you are coming from Elminage Original, the sequel feels very familiar but significantly “smoother”:

  • Expanded Style Load: The custom portrait system was improved. You can now use higher-resolution images for your character portraits, making the “Face Load” feature even more rewarding for those who want to import their own art.

  • Refined Class Balance: Several classes received tweaks. For example, the Ninja class became more viable in the mid-game, and the Alchemist’s crafting system was expanded to allow for even more complex weapon enchantments.

  • The “High Master” Skills: Once a character reaches a high enough level, they unlock unique “High Master” abilities that drastically change their utility (e.g., Thieves becoming much better at stealing rare items directly from bosses).

  • Improved UI: Menus are slightly more responsive, and the map system provides more clarity in the sprawling, multi-floor dungeons.

Key Features

  • Massive Bestiary: Features hundreds of unique monsters, each with detailed “Monster Notes” that provide lore and flavor text (if you can read the Japanese).

  • Summoning System: The Summoner class can “contract” with almost any monster in the game (including bosses). Once contracted, you can summon that monster to act as a 7th party member.

  • Marriage & Inheritance: A deep post-game mechanic allows you to “marry” characters or summoned monsters to create new “Devilish” offspring that inherit stats and unique traits from their parents.

  • Randomized Loot: The game features a “Prefix/Suffix” loot system, meaning two “Long Swords” can have vastly different stats based on the enchantments they carry.

Short Review: The Hardcore Choice

The Good

  • The Perfect Loop: The cycle of “Explore → Get Loot → Craft → Go Deeper” is perfected here. It is incredibly rewarding for players who love “min-maxing” their party.

  • Technical Stability: It is one of the most stable DRPGs on the system, with very few bugs despite its massive amount of data.

  • Freedom: The sandbox nature allows you to feel like a true adventurer rather than a protagonist following a script.

The Bad

  • The Language Barrier: This is the biggest hurdle. Since the game is 100% Japanese and very text-heavy, you will need to rely on external wikis or translation tools to understand item effects and quest objectives.

  • Brutal Traps: Just like its predecessor, Elminage II is not afraid to kill your entire party with a single “Teleport Trap” into a solid wall (instantly deleting your save data if you aren’t careful).
