Rengoku II: The Stairway to H.E.A.V.E.N. (2006) is a dark, stylish sci-fi dungeon crawler that significantly improved upon its predecessor. It is famous for its “body-mod” combat system and its narrative themes based on Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy.
Game Story & Premise
You control A.D.A.M. (Autonomous Dual-purpose Adaptive Mechanism), a sentient battle android trapped in a massive tower known as the “Rengoku” (Purgatory).
The Premise: In a world where wars have ended because androids were too efficient at killing, these machines are now forced to fight each other for eternity for human entertainment. To escape, you must fight through eight floors, the first seven of which are named after the Seven Deadly Sins (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride). As you ascend, A.D.A.M. begins to recover memories of a past life and a woman named Beatrice.
The Body-Modification System
The core hook of the game is that your character is a walking arsenal. You don’t just “hold” weapons; you become them.
-
Slot Customization: You can equip weapons to five different body parts, each mapped to a face button:
-
Triangle: Head (e.g., horns, lasers, drills)
-
Square: Left Arm (e.g., shields, pistols, blades)
-
Circle: Right Arm (e.g., chainsaws, shotguns, hammers)
-
X: Torso (e.g., armor plating, aura generators)
-
Legs: Mobility and kicks (automated)
-
-
Elixir Skin: This is the game’s currency. You gain it by “overkilling” enemies. It is used to upgrade your health, defense, and most importantly, your slot capacity, allowing you to cycle through multiple weapons per limb.
-
Overheating: You must manage the heat gauge of your weapons. If you spam an attack too much, the limb “burns out” and becomes unusable until it cools down.
Unlockables & H.E.A.V.E.N. Mode
Rengoku II features a massive post-game challenge for players who master the tower.
| Unlockable | Requirement |
| New Game + | Complete the game once. You keep all your weapons and stats. |
| H.E.A.V.E.N. Mode | Beat the 8th-floor boss (Gryphus) and re-enter the “Primordium” (Floor 0). |
| Highest Floor | Complete all 99 levels of the H.E.A.V.E.N. mode. |
| Rare Weapons | Many “Star” tier weapons only drop from rare golden enemies found in the higher floors of H.E.A.V.E.N. |
Key Gameplay Features
-
Soul-like Mechanics: If you die, you lose all currently equipped weapons. You must fight your way back to the room where you fell to retrieve them.
-
300+ Weapons: The sheer variety is staggering. You can create a pure “Melee Brawler” build, a “Long-Range Sniper” build, or a “Status Effect” build using flamethrowers and poison needles.
-
Weapon Experience: The more you use a specific weapon, the more its level increases, improving its damage and reducing its heat buildup.
-
Multiplayer: Features a 4-player Ad-Hoc mode where you can take your custom-built A.D.A.M. into arena combat against your friends.
Short Review: Obsessive Customization
The Good
-
Jun Suemi Art: The character designs are by legendary artist Jun Suemi (Wizardry, Guin Saga), giving the androids a beautiful, biomechanical “Guyver” aesthetic.
-
Deep Tweaking: If you enjoy “stat-porn” and spending hours in menus perfecting a build, this is one of the best games on the PSP for that.
-
Atmosphere: The industrial soundtrack and desolate tower environments create a strong sense of isolation and melancholy.
The Bad
-
Repetitive Combat: The actual fighting often boils down to circle-strafing and managing cooldowns. It lacks the kinetic impact of a game like God of War.
-
Cramped Levels: Most of the game takes place in small, boxy rooms and narrow corridors, which can feel claustrophobic over a 30-hour playthrough.
