Ys: The Ark of Napishtim (2005) is a landmark title in the long-running Ys (pronounced “eess”) series. While the PC and PS2 versions are beloved for their blistering speed, the PSP version is a bit of a “black sheep” due to technical hurdles—yet it remains a fascinating, content-heavy port of Adol Christin’s sixth canonical adventure.

  • Key Feature: The first Ys game to utilize 3D pre-rendered environments with 2D sprites, setting the stage for the modern Ys engine.

The Adventurer: Adol Christin

The story begins with the series’ red-haired protagonist, Adol, being swept overboard by a Great Vortex.

  • The Setting: The Canaan Islands, inhabited by the long-eared Rehda people.

  • The Conflict: Adol is caught between the isolationist Rehda, a group of human “Eretians” (pirates and castaways), and the expanding Romun Empire, all while uncovering the secret of a weather-controlling ancient civilization.

📝 Game Description

Ark of Napishtim introduced the Three Elemental Swords system, which defines the gameplay flow.

Gameplay Pillars:

  • Sword Trio: You switch between three magical swords:

    • Livilart (Fire): Fast, balanced slashes.

    • Brillante (Wind): Rapier-style thrusts with a whirlwind finishing move.

    • Ericcil (Thunder): Heavy, slower strikes that deal massive damage.

  • Emel Upgrades: Instead of just buying new weapons, you collect “Emel” (blue crystals) from fallen enemies to level up your swords, unlocking new magic spells and increasing their power.

  • Platforming Combat: This entry features a heavy emphasis on jumping attacks and the “Dash-Jump,” which is required to reach hidden chests and navigate the vertical ruins of the islands.

  • PSP Exclusives: To compensate for performance issues, the PSP version includes several exclusive mini-games (like a trial of strength) and a dedicated “Media Install” feature to help speed up the game.

⭐ Short Review: A Great Game, A Tough Port

The Good

  • Incredible Music: Typical of Nihon Falcom, the soundtrack is “high-octane rock” at its finest. Tracks like “The Successor of Alshed” are all-time greats.

  • Satisfying Progression: There is something deeply addictive about grinding for Emel and watching your swords evolve into glowing, god-like weapons.

  • Challenging Bosses: The “Galba” bosses are screen-filling monsters that require precise pattern recognition and dodging.

The Bad

  • The Loading Screens: On an actual PSP UMD, the loading times are notorious. Moving from one screen to the next can take 5–10 seconds, which breaks the flow of a “high-speed” game.

  • Framerate Chug: In busy areas with lots of water effects or enemies, the game can dip significantly below 30 FPS.

  • Lower Fidelity: Compared to the PS2 version, the CGI movies are heavily compressed and the audio quality is slightly “tinny.”
