Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny (2009) is the first and only entry of the premier weapon-based fighting series for the PSP. It’s essentially a portable version of Soulcalibur IV, featuring the same high-fidelity engine, but with a unique solo mode and a very special guest character from another PlayStation legend.

Game Story & Premise

Instead of the standard “Soul Chronicle” mode, Broken Destiny introduces “The Gauntlet,” a lighthearted, comedic tutorial-driven story.

Back Cover Description:

“The fight for the soul continues on the go! Experience the world-class combat of the Soulcalibur universe in the palm of your hand. Broken Destiny delivers the franchise’s signature 3D fighting mechanics, stunning visuals, and deep character customization to the PSP system.Follow the adventures of Hilde, Cassandra, and the newcomer Dampierre in an all-new quest. Master the blades of over 20 legendary warriors, including the God of War himself, Kratos. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or a new challenger, the battle for the ultimate swords has never been this portable!”

The Guest Character: Kratos

The biggest draw for this version was the inclusion of Kratos from the God of War series.

  • Playstyle: He uses his Blades of Chaos for long-range sweeps and his Cestus for heavy close-range hits.

  • Faithful Design: His move set includes his signature “Spirit of Hercules” combo and his “Poseidon’s Rage” magic as a Critical Finish.

Secret Codes & Unlocks

Broken Destiny handles unlocks differently than previous games—almost all characters (including Kratos) are available from the start. However, there are hidden rewards and specific ways to unlock gear.

The “Dampierre” Secret

Dampierre is the game’s unique original character. While he looks like a joke character, his moves are randomized. If you land his “Critical Edge” while your health is flashing red, he performs a different, highly damaging secret animation.

Unlockable Titles & Equipment

Most “Secrets” are found in the Trials and The Gauntlet:

  • Gauntlet Rewards: Completing chapters in “The Gauntlet” unlocks specific voice lines and rare armor pieces for the Character Creator.

  • Honors (Achievements): There are 80 “Honors” to earn. Completing difficult ones, like winning a match with a “Perfect” or performing a “Just Impact,” unlocks exclusive titles to display in local multiplayer.

Character Creation Secret

If you want to create a character that looks like Darth Vader or The Apprentice (who were in Soulcalibur IV but cut from this version), many of their armor pieces are hidden as rewards for completing the Endless Trial mode.

Key Gameplay Features

  • The Gauntlet Mode: A series of over 80 missions that teach you everything from basic movement to advanced “frame data” tactics, all wrapped in a funny story.

  • Character Creation: One of the most robust creators on the PSP. You can build a custom fighter from scratch or edit the existing roster’s outfits.

  • Active Defense: Features the “Soul Crush” and “Critical Finish” mechanics from SCIV, rewarding aggressive play and punishing those who block too much.

Short Review: Technical Sorcery

The Good

  • 60 FPS Combat: The game runs at a silky smooth 60 frames per second, which is a massive achievement for the PSP hardware.

  • Visuals: It is widely considered one of the top 3 best-looking games on the system. The lighting on the armor and weapon trails is incredible.

  • Kratos: He isn’t just a “skin”; he is a fully realized, top-tier competitive character.

The Bad

  • No Arcade/Story Mode: Outside of “The Gauntlet,” there is no traditional Arcade mode with character endings. This makes the single-player experience feel a bit “lite.”

  • No Online Play: The game only supports local Ad-Hoc multiplayer. (Though in 2026, you can use tunneling software to play online via emulators).
