Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines (2009) is a significant bridge in the series’ lore, acting as the direct sequel to the original Assassin’s Creed and a prequel to the events of Assassin’s Creed II. It was developed by Griptonite Games in collaboration with Ubisoft Montreal to bring the full open-world assassination experience to the PSP.

Game Story & Premise

The game takes place one month after the death of Robert de Sablé. Altaïr is now the Mentor of the Assassins and is hunting the remaining Templars who have fled to the island of Cyprus.

Back Cover Description:

“The journey of Altaïr continues! In the direct sequel to the award-winning Assassin’s Creed, Altaïr tracks the Templar Order to the island of Cyprus to uncover their secret plans.Explore the bustling cities of Limassol and Kyrenia, mastering new assassination techniques and a refined combat system. For the first time, witness the evolving relationship between Altaïr and the Templar Maria Thorpe. Your path is fraught with betrayal and ancient conspiracies—will you find the truth behind the Templar Archive?”

PS3 Connectivity: The “Cross-Play” Secret

One of the coolest features in 2009 was the ability to link your PSP to your PS3 copy of Assassin’s Creed II via USB.

Unlockables for Assassin’s Creed II (PS3):

  • Weapons: You can unlock six unique weapons from Bloodlines for Ezio to use, including Maria Thorpe’s Longsword, Bouchart’s Blade, and the Dark Oracle’s Bone Dagger.

  • Money: You can transfer the Templar Coins you collect in Bloodlines directly into Ezio’s florin bank account.

Unlockables for Bloodlines (PSP):

  • Hidden Blade Upgrades: Connecting to the PS3 version unlocks Codex pages that allow Altaïr to block with his Hidden Blade and increases counter-kill damage.

  • The Hidden Gun: If you have enough Codex pages in AC2, Altaïr can use a prototype of the hidden gun (firing throwing knives at high speed).

Secret Codes & Accomplishments

There is a “Cheats” menu in the options, though most “secrets” are tied to the Accomplishment system (the PSP’s version of Trophies).

Invincibility Code

While there are few verified “button” cheats, some versions of the game respond to:

  • Triangle, Square, Square, Circle, X, Down, Down at the main menu. (Note: This may disable saving on some firmware versions).

Templar Coins

Instead of flags, you collect Templar Coins (Bronze, Silver, Gold). These are used as currency in the Upgrades Menu to buy:

  • Health Increases: Extra bars for your Sync meter.

  • Damage Boosts: Make your sword and hidden blade more lethal.

  • Critical Hit Rate: Increases the frequency of automatic finishing moves.

Key Gameplay Differences

  • No Social Stealth: Because the PSP couldn’t handle massive crowds, the “Social Stealth” (blending with monks/crowds) from AC1 is largely removed. The game focuses more on rooftop movement and traditional line-of-sight stealth.

  • New Kills: Altaïr can now perform “Ledge Assassinations” (pulling enemies off roofs), a move that was introduced in AC2.

  • Boss Battles: Unlike the first game, Bloodlines features several formal boss fights against high-ranking Templars with unique health bars and patterns.

Short Review: A Faithful “1.5”

The Good

  • Technical Feat: It is a genuine open-world Assassin’s Creed on a handheld. The parkour and climbing feel exactly like the console versions.

  • Lore Heavy: It explains how Altaïr and Maria Thorpe went from enemies to a couple, which is vital for understanding the bloodline in Revelations.

  • Combat: The counter-kill animations remain just as brutal and satisfying as the original game.

The Bad

  • Empty Cities: Due to hardware limits, the streets of Cyprus feel very empty compared to Jerusalem or Acre.

  • Camera Issues: Since the PSP lacks a second analog stick, you have to hold L and use the face buttons to move the camera, which can be clunky during chases.

  • Repetitive Side Missions: Much like the first game, you will do a lot of “intercept the courier” and “save the citizen” tasks.
