The Sims 2: Pets (2006) on the PSP is a unique entry in the franchise. Unlike the standard The Sims 2 for PSP (which was a linear, story-driven adventure involving aliens and conspiracies), Pets returns to the series’ roots as a sandbox life simulation. It is effectively a “lite” version of the PC game, optimized for on-the-go play with a focus on animal companions.
-
Key Difference: Unlike the console versions (PS2/Wii), the PSP version features “Town Square,” a central hub for pet-related shopping and social interaction.
The Premise: Life with Furry Friends
You create a Sim and their pet (Cat or Dog) and move into a neighborhood called Whiskerton.
-
Create-A-Pet: You can customize breeds, fur patterns, and personalities. You can even mix breeds to create “Designer Pets” like Labradoodles.
-
Training: You must teach your pets “Behaviors” (scolding them for scratching the couch or praising them for using the litter box) and “Commands” (Sit, Stay, Roll Over).
-
Pet Careers: Your pets can actually get jobs! There are three tracks: Security, Service, and Show Biz. Each promotion unlocks special fur colors or patterns.
PSP Exclusive Mechanics
-
Pet Points: Instead of just Simoleons, you earn “Pet Points” by fulfilling your pet’s wants. These are spent at the Town Square to buy high-end pet beds, toys, and rare accessories.
-
Direct Control: Like the other PSP Sims games, you control your Sim directly with the analog nub, making it feel more like a third-person adventure than a “point-and-click” game.
-
Object Limiter: Due to hardware constraints, the PSP version has a “Fire Code” or object limit. You can’t fill your house with infinite furniture, which forces you to be strategic with your interior design.
Secrets & Cheat Codes
To use cheats, you must first spawn the Cheat Gnome (a small statue that appears near your house).
The Cheat Gnome Code
During gameplay, press: L, L, R, X, X, Up (D-Pad).
Once the Gnome is visible, you can enter these codes for specific effects:
-
Advance Time (6 Hours): Up, Left, Down, Right, R
-
Give 10,000 Simoleons: Triangle, Up, Left, Down, Right
-
Give Pet Points: Triangle, Circle, X, Square, L, R
-
Unlock All Pet Breeds: Up, Up, Down, Left, Left, Right, Circle, X
Hidden Career Unlocks
By reaching the top of pet career tracks, you unlock “Unnatural” fur colors:
-
Show Biz: Unlocks Pink and Purple fur.
-
Security: Unlocks Neon Green and Blue fur.
-
Service: Unlocks Deep Red and Orange fur.
Short Review: A Portable Sandbox
The Good
-
Total Freedom: If you disliked the linear story of the first PSP Sims game, this provides the classic “sandbox” experience you were likely looking for.
-
Create-A-Pet Depth: The level of detail in customizing your animals is surprisingly close to the PC version.
-
Portability: The UI is well-adapted for the small screen, with menus that are easy to navigate.
The Bad
-
Loading Times: Moving between your home and the Town Square involves notoriously long loading screens.
-
Stripped Features: There is no “Sim Aging” in this version—your Sims remain adults forever. There are also no children, ghosts, or werewolves.
-
Build Mode Limits: The “Object Limiter” can be very frustrating for players who enjoy elaborate home decoration.
