Patapon 2 (2009) is frequently cited as the fan-favorite entry in the trilogy. It took the perfect “marching to the beat” foundation of the first game and expanded it with a massive evolution tree, new units, and the introduction of the powerful Hero Patapon.
The Story: Shipwrecked in Karmen Land
Continuing directly from the first game, the Patapons’ ship is destroyed by a Kraken while they sail toward “Earthend.” They wash up on a strange new island inhabited by the Karmen Tribe—masked, shadowy warriors who serve the Four Dark Heroes. You, the Almighty, must guide them through these new lands to uncover the secret of the mysterious “Star.”
The Hero Patapon: Your Ultimate Warrior
The biggest addition to Patapon 2 is the Hero. Unlike regular units, the Hero is a single, customizable powerhouse who wears a Mask and can trigger a devastating Hero Mode.
-
Hero Mode: Activated by maintaining a perfect rhythm during Fever. Each class has a unique Hero ability:
-
Tatepon (Shield): Creates an indestructible “Energy Field.”
-
Yaripon (Spear): Throws explosive “Iron Fist” spears.
-
Yumipon (Bow): Fires a “Broken Arrow” volley that rains from the sky.
-
-
Masks: Earned by hatching “Eggs” in the Patagate. Masks provide stat boosts like increased HP, fire resistance, or attack speed.
The Evolution Map (Mater)
Unlike Patapon 1, where you just used materials to make a unit, Patapon 2 introduced a branching Evolution Tree via the Tree of Life, Mater.
-
Rarepons: You can evolve units into different forms (Rarepons) such as:
-
Pyopyo (Rabbit): Fast movement and high jump.
-
Mogyu (Bull): Massive attack power but slow speed.
-
Sabara (Angel): Great all-around stats and essential for unlocking flying units.
-
-
New Classes: To unlock the new unit types, you must progress through specific branches of the evolution map:
-
Toripon (Bird Riders): Long-range aerial attackers.
-
Robopon (Mechs): Heavy hitters specializing in destroying structures.
-
Mahopon (Magicians): Support units that can heal or cast meteor spells.
-
New Drum Commands
In addition to the classic March, Attack, and Defend, Patapon 2 added three tactical commands:
-
DON DON CHAKA CHAKA (X, X, Triangle, Triangle): Jump. Essential for dodging ground-based lasers or earthquake attacks.
-
PATA PON DON CHAKA (Square, Circle, X, Triangle): Party/Cleanse. Removes status effects like Burning, Freezing, or Sleep.
-
PON PON CHAKA CHAKA (Circle, Circle, Triangle, Triangle): Charge. Power up your next attack or defense for massive impact.
Short Review: The Perfect Sequel
The Good
-
Incredible Depth: The evolution tree adds hours of strategy and “grinding” that feels rewarding rather than tedious.
-
The Hero System: Gives the player a “centerpiece” character to focus on, making the army feel more personal.
-
Mini-Games: Features 7 rhythm-based mini-games (like the Blacksmith or the Farming tree) to help you earn rare materials.
The Bad
-
Steep Grinding: To reach the “Ultimate” Rarepons (like the Dragon-form Gyaba), you’ll need to farm rare bosses dozens of times for materials.
-
Complexity: New players might find the branching evolution map slightly overwhelming compared to the simplicity of the first game.
