The Anti-Hero: James Grayson

Unlike the stoic Nathan Hale from the main series, James Grayson is a disgraced British Marine with a major chip on his shoulder.

The Motivation: After being forced to kill his own brother in a Chimeran conversion center, Grayson goes on a AWOL rampage to destroy every center in Europe.
The Recruit: He is eventually spared from a death sentence by the French Resistance (the Maquis) to lead a desperate counter-attack against the Chimera.

📝 Game Description

The game shifts the series from First-Person to Third-Person, a move that allowed Bend Studio to implement their refined cover mechanics from the Syphon Filter games.

Key Features:

“Snap-to” Cover System: Grayson automatically crouches behind waist-high walls and peeks out to fire. It feels remarkably fluid for a handheld and avoids the “clunky” movement found in other mobile shooters.
The “Focus” Aim Box: To solve the single-analog stick problem, the game uses a large yellow targeting box. If an enemy is inside the box, the crosshair automatically locks on. This lets you focus on movement and dodging while still feeling like a sharpshooter.
Exotic Arsenal: You carry the entire Resistance weapon wheel, including:
- The Auger: Fires through walls and creates a thermal shield.
- The Schism: Fires “ricochet” saws that bounce around rooms.
- The Fareye: A sniper rifle that allows you to trigger a “slow-motion” focus mode.
Connectivity (Resistance Connect): If you linked your PSP to a PS3 running Resistance 2, you could unlock Infected Mode. This gives Grayson glowing eyes, regenerative health, the ability to breathe underwater, and access to the HE .44 Magnum.

The Good

Incredible Production Value: The graphics pushed the PSP to its limit, featuring some of the best lighting and character models on the system. The voice acting (Grayson is voiced by Robin Atkin Downes) is top-tier.
Varied Gameplay: It’s not just “hallway shooting.” You’ll pilot massive mechs, engage in underwater firefights, and face screen-filling bosses.
Deep Multiplayer: At launch, it featured a robust 8-player online mode with ranks, medals, and traditional modes like CTF and Team Deathmatch.

The Bad

The “Analog Nub” Fatigue: Even with the great aim-assist, long play sessions can be taxing on your thumb due to the PSP’s small analog nub.
Scripted Cover: Occasionally, Grayson will “stick” to cover when you’re trying to run away, or fail to stick when you’re under heavy fire, which can lead to frustrating deaths.
Platforming Segments: The few sections that require precise jumping or swimming can feel a bit imprecise compared to the tight gunplay.
