Killzone: Liberation (2006) is one of the most unique and highly acclaimed shooters on the PSP. Rather than attempting a standard first-person shooter (FPS) like the console original, Guerrilla Games pivoted to a tactical top-down isometric perspective, creating a “Thinking Man’s Action Game” that worked perfectly for a handheld.
Game Story & Premise
Set just two months after the events of the original Killzone for PS2, the Helghast are still holding Southern Vekta in a brutal grip.
The Plot: You reprise your role as Jan Templar, an ISA soldier sent behind enemy lines on a covert mission. The Helghast General, Armin Metrac, has taken high-ranking ISA officials hostage and is employing ruthless measures to crush the resistance. Your mission is to rescue the hostages, gather intelligence, and dismantle Metrac’s stronghold. The story acts as a crucial bridge between the first game and Killzone 2.
Back Cover Description
A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE HELGHAST WAR.
“The war for Vekta is far from over. Take the fight to the Helghast in an all-new tactical adventure designed specifically for the PSP. As Jan Templar, you must penetrate deep into enemy territory to rescue kidnapped ISA leaders and stop General Metrac’s reign of terror.
Experience intense, third-person combat with a strategic edge. Master a massive arsenal of weaponry, utilize cover effectively, and command your teammates to outmaneuver the superior Helghast forces. With breathtaking graphics, destructible environments, and local wireless co-op for the entire campaign, Killzone: Liberation is the ultimate handheld battlefield.
One soldier. One mission. The fight for freedom begins now.“
Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
Tactical Aiming: The game uses an “auto-lock” assistance system combined with manual strafing. You can crouch behind cover, lean out to shoot, and use “precision aiming” to target explosive barrels or weak points.
-
Command System: You aren’t always alone. You can issue simple, effective orders to your AI partner (like Rico) to provide suppression fire or plant explosives.
-
Vehicle Gameplay: Features missions where you pilot tanks or hovercrafts, breaking up the on-foot tactical shooting with heavy-hitting vehicle combat.
-
Upgrade System: By completing “Challenge Modes” (mini-games like target practice or bomb defusal), you earn points to upgrade Templar’s abilities, such as carrying more grenades or increasing health.
The “Chapter 5” DLC
Originally, the game ended on a cliffhanger. Shortly after launch, Guerrilla released Chapter 5 as a free digital download. It concluded the storyline and added online infrastructure multiplayer. Note: If you play the 2023 PS4/PS5 version, this “DLC” is included in the base game by default.
Short Review: A PSP Essential
The Good
-
The “Killzone” Feel: Despite the camera change, it perfectly captures the heavy, gritty, and industrial atmosphere of the series.
-
Fair Challenge: The game is notoriously difficult, but the checkpoint system is generous, encouraging you to treat each encounter like a tactical puzzle.
-
Production Value: The cutscenes, sound design, and character models were some of the best seen on the PSP in 2006.
The Bad
-
Targeting Issues: Occasionally, the auto-lock can be finicky, causing you to shoot at a distant grunt instead of the guy right in front of you.
-
Very Brown: True to the mid-2000s aesthetic, the color palette is almost entirely shades of mud, grey, and rust.
