Dynasty Warriors Vol. 2 (2006) is the second attempt at bringing the “1 vs. 1,000” action of the Three Kingdoms era to the PSP. Unlike the mainline console games which feature wide-open battlefields, the Vol. series was designed specifically for handheld play, utilizing a unique “grid-based” tactical map system.
Game Premise
Set during the fall of the Han Dynasty in ancient China, you choose a legendary general from one of the three warring states—Shu, Wei, or Wu.
The Plot: While the story follows the classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms narrative (The Yellow Turban Rebellion, Hu Lao Gate, Chi Bi), the gameplay is segmented into small “stages” connected by a tactical map. Your goal is to navigate the grid, manage your army’s morale, and capture enemy strongholds to eventually face the opposing commander.
📄 Back Cover Description
THE BATTLE FOR ANCIENT CHINA GOES PORTABLE ONCE AGAIN!
“Lead the charge and carve your destiny in the most expansive Dynasty Warriors yet on the PSP. Choose from over 48 legendary officers and command up to 300 sub-officers to dominate the battlefield.
Strategy meets action in the refined Battlefield Grid System, where every move you make on the map dictates the flow of the fight. Experience non-linear branching paths in the massive Musou Mode, or challenge your friends in 4-player wireless Hand-to-Hand combat. With new stages, new characters, and a deeper ‘Officer’ collection system, the power of an entire army is in your hands.
One warrior against a thousand. Are you ready for the challenge?“
Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
Grid-Based Map: Instead of running across a massive map, you move a token on a grid. Each square represents a small skirmish. Winning these skirmishes captures the territory and opens paths to the next.
-
The Officer System: You can recruit up to 300 sub-officers. You choose four to accompany you into battle, and they provide passive stat boosts (like increased defense or element attacks) and special “Musou” abilities.
-
Branching Paths: For the first time on PSP, your performance in a stage (and which path you take on the map) determines which battle you face next, allowing for multiple endings per kingdom.
-
Village Events: Certain squares on the grid are villages or neutral zones where you can interact with NPCs, recover health, or receive side-quests mid-battle.
Enhancements Over Vol. 1
-
Character Roster: Includes all 48 characters from Dynasty Warriors 5, including favorites like Guan Yu, Lu Bu, and the newcomer Zuo Ci.
-
Stable Performance: The “fog of war” and draw distance issues from the first PSP game were significantly improved, allowing for more enemies on screen.
-
Stable Multiplayer: Features a 4-player ad-hoc mode where you can compete in races or traditional deathmatches.
Short Review: Tactical Hack-and-Slash
The Good
-
Strategic Depth: The grid system adds a layer of “think-before-you-fight” that isn’t present in the console versions.
-
Officer Collecting: Collecting rare sub-officers (like the “Two Qiaos”) adds a “Pokémon-style” addictive quality to the game.
-
Perfect for Short Bursts: Because missions are broken down into small skirmishes, you can finish a segment in 5 minutes.
The Bad
-
Not “Full” Open World: Fans expecting the seamless open-world experience of Dynasty Warriors 5 on PS2 might find the grid system and short skirmishes restrictive.
-
Repetitive Combat: Like all entries in the series, the core combat is largely “Square-Square-Square-Triangle,” which can feel repetitive over long play sessions.
