Black Rock Shooter: The Game (2011) is an action-RPG that stands out for its striking character designs by the artist huke and its post-apocalyptic, high-concept narrative. Originally released in Japan, it finally made its way to the West in 2013, offering a unique “on-rails” combat experience that feels part shooter and part tactical RPG.

Story & Premise

Set in the year 2051, the game depicts a world on the brink of total extinction.

The Plot: Nineteen years ago, a massive alien invasion devastated Earth. Now, only twelve humans remain alive. In a last-ditch effort to survive, humanity awakens the ultimate battle android: Black Rock Shooter (BRS). With her glowing blue eye and a massive “Rock Cannon,” she must hunt down the seven alien apostles and their minions to reclaim the planet. Unlike the anime versions, this game’s story is a standalone sci-fi military epic focused on BRS’s role as humanity’s final protector.

Back Cover Description

THE LAST HOPE FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL IS HER.

“In a world where only twelve humans remain, one girl is awakened to end the alien invasion once and for all. Take control of the ultimate battle android, Black Rock Shooter, in an intense action-RPG experience.

Traverse the ruins of civilization—from the streets of San Francisco to the wreckage of Tokyo—and engage in high-speed tactical combat. Master the art of the Rock Cannon, equip powerful skills, and manage your heat gauge to decimate extraterrestrial threats. Featuring stunning animated cutscenes by ufotable and a high-octane soundtrack, Black Rock Shooter: The Game is a fight for the future that fits in your hand.

Awaken. Destroy. Reclaim.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Hybrid Combat: When you encounter an enemy, the game shifts to a fixed-position battle. You use the analog nub to aim your crosshair and the face buttons to fire, block, or dodge. It’s about timing and reflexes rather than free movement.

  • The Heat Gauge: Every shot and dodge builds up heat. If the gauge fills completely, BRS will overheat, leaving her immobile and unable to attack for several seconds. Managing this cooldown is the core strategic loop of the game.

  • Skills & Customization: As you level up and complete challenges, you unlock active and passive skills (like the Sniper Rifle, Blade, or Defense buffs). You can equip up to four active skills at a time.

  • Motorcycle Missions: To break up the on-foot exploration, the game features high-speed vehicular segments where BRS races down highways, dodging obstacles and blasting enemies from her bike.

  • Production Quality: The game features an opening theme (“No Scared”) by ONE OK ROCK and beautifully directed cinematics that capture the franchise’s iconic style.

Short Review: Style Over Substance?

The Good

  • Visual Flair: The character models (especially BRS and the bosses like White Rock Shooter) look fantastic and stay very true to huke’s original art style.

  • Fast-Paced Fights: Once you get into the rhythm of dodging and skill-chaining, the combat becomes incredibly satisfying and snappy.

  • Soundtrack: The heavy, electronic-rock score perfectly matches the “last stand” atmosphere of the game.

The Bad

  • Bland Environments: While the characters look great, the levels themselves are often linear, repetitive, and lack detail (lots of grey ruins and empty corridors).

  • Repetition: The mission structure (Move to A, kill X enemies, go to B) doesn’t change much throughout the 12–15 hour campaign.

  • Incoherent Story: For those not already familiar with the Black Rock Shooter universe, the lore can feel a bit disjointed and confusing.
