Ben 10: Alien Force (2008) was the debut of the “teen Ben” era on the PSP. While the original Protector of Earth focused on the classic 10-year-old Ben, this title introduced the more mature tone of the Alien Force series, featuring a new art style and a completely fresh roster of alien transformations.

Game Story & Premise

Set five years after the original series, Ben has taken off the Omnitrix to live a normal life—until Grandpa Max goes missing.

The Plot: Ben, Gwen, and Kevin team up with a disgraced Tetramand Plumber named Gorvan to recover illegal alien technology. However, they soon realize Gorvan is a double agent working for the Highbreed. The trio must track down the Highbreed’s weather-altering tower before it terraforms Earth into a frozen wasteland, killing all humanity in the process.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

The “Original Five”: Unlike the console versions which eventually unlock more, the PSP version focuses heavily on Ben’s first five Alien Force transformations:
- Swampfire: Fire attacks and health regeneration.
- Humungousaur: Raw strength for breaking walls and heavy lifting.
- Big Chill: Freezing enemies and gliding across gaps.
- Spidermonkey: Wall-crawling and web-slinging to trap foes.
- Jetray: High-speed flight and underwater navigation.
Gwen & Kevin Segments: In certain levels, you switch away from Ben to play as Gwen (using energy blasts and platforms) or Kevin (absorbing wood, metal, or stone to gain different defensive shells).
Infinite Combo System: The game encourages aggressive play with an “Unlimited Combo” meter. Landing hits without taking damage builds your score and allows for powerful finisher moves.
Co-op Mode: One of the rare PSP titles that features Ad-Hoc Co-op, allowing a second player to jump in as Gwen or Kevin to help Ben through the campaign.

Short Review: A Solid Transition

The Good

Faithful Adaptation: The “Comic Book” style cutscenes and original voice cast make it feel exactly like an episode of the show.
Character Variety: Playing as Gwen and Kevin adds much-needed variety to the standard “punch everything” gameplay of previous entries.
Handheld Performance: The 3D models are clean, and the game runs smoothly even during hectic fights with multiple DNAliens.

The Bad

Short Length: Similar to other Ben 10 titles, you can finish the story in roughly 5 hours.
Limited Roster: While the show featured 10+ aliens, being limited to just 5 (on the PSP/PS2/Wii versions) felt a bit restrictive for fans.
Repetitive Combat: Many levels consist of “Enter room, kill 10 robots, move to next room,” which can get monotonous toward the end.
