Ben 10: Alien Force – Vilgax Attacks (2009) is the third installment in the series and is widely considered the most ambitious of the Alien Force era. While previous games were restricted to Earth, this title lived up to its name by taking Ben into deep space to visit the home planets of his various alien forms.

Story & Premise

The game is based on the third season of the Alien Force cartoon.

The Plot: Vilgax invades Earth with a massive “Null Void Projector,” a weapon that can beam entire cities into the Null Void. Professor Paradox arrives just in time to send Ben, Gwen, and Kevin back in time to stop Vilgax before his weapon is completed. Using Ship (the Galvanic Mechomorph) as their spacecraft, the team travels across the galaxy to find and destroy the power sources for Vilgax’s machine.

The journey takes you to iconic home worlds, including Vulpin (Wildmutt’s home), Terradino (Humungousaur’s home), and even the mind-bending Encephalonus IV (Brainstorm’s home).

Back Cover Description

JOURNEY TO THE ENDS OF THE GALAXY!

“Take the battle to Vilgax in the most expansive Ben 10 adventure yet! For the first time, blast off into outer space to explore the home planets of Ben’s alien forms. As Vilgax prepares a weapon to plunge Earth into the Null Void, only Ben Tennyson—equipped with 10 powerful alien forms—stands in his way.

Command the unique abilities of Echo Echo, Goop, Brainstorm, Chromastone, and more. Master an updated combat system with branching combos and use your aliens to solve complex environmental puzzles. Pilot the upgradeable spacecraft, Ship, through intense asteroid fields and engage in epic boss battles against Ben’s most fearsome foes.

The galaxy is at stake. It’s Hero Time!

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • The Full 10: Unlike the previous game which limited Ben to five forms, this entry allows you to unlock and use all 10 of his primary Alien Force aliens: Swampfire, Humungousaur, Big Chill, Spidermonkey, Jetray, Cannonbolt, Goop, Brainstorm, Echo Echo, and Chromastone.

  • No Time-Out: A major shift for the series—the Omnitrix no longer has a “time-out” limit. Instead, you have an Energy Bar. Standard movement and basic attacks are free, but special abilities (like Big Chill’s freeze or Echo Echo’s clones) consume energy.

  • Interstellar Hub: Between missions, you control Ship in a 3D space-shooter minigame. You can upgrade Ship’s weapons and shields to make these transitions easier.

  • Platforming & Puzzles: Each planet is designed around specific alien abilities. For example, you’ll need Goop to slip through tight vents or Brainstorm to hack electrical terminals.

  • Alien X: While not a standard playable form for combat, Alien X appears in a pivotal, cinematic moment at the end of the game to help Ben turn the tide against Vilgax.

Short Review: A Galactic Upgrade

The Good

  • Variety of Locations: Visiting different planets makes the game feel much larger in scope than its predecessors. Each world has a unique visual identity and soundtrack.

  • Improved Combat: The ability to upgrade specific alien moves via “Omnitrix Points” adds a nice layer of RPG progression.

  • Classic Villains: You don’t just fight Vilgax; you’ll face off against Charmcaster, Darkstar, Albedo, and Dr. Animo.

The Bad

  • No Co-op: Unlike the first Alien Force game, this entry is strictly single-player on the PSP, which was a disappointment for those who enjoyed playing with a friend as Gwen or Kevin.

  • PSP Visuals: While the console versions (Xbox 360/Wii) looked quite sharp, the PSP version suffers from some muddy textures and lower-resolution cutscenes.

  • Fixed Camera: The camera is often locked in a fixed position, which can make some of the platforming jumps more difficult than they should be.
