Star Ocean: Second Evolution (2008) is an enhanced PlayStation Portable remake of the fan-favorite 1998 PlayStation 1 classic, Star Ocean: The Second Story. Developed by TOSE and published by Square Enix, it updates one of the most beloved entries in the franchise with modern presentation, refined combat tweaks, new anime cutscenes, full voice acting, and exclusive story content.

🌌 Dual Protagonist System & Story

At the start of the adventure, you pick between two main characters, altering which perspectives, character scenes, and recruitable allies you encounter throughout the campaign:

  • 🚀 Claude C. Kenny: A young Earth Federation ensign and son of hero Ronyx J. Kenny (from First Departure). While investigating a mysterious artifact on Planet Milokeenia, he accidentally teleports himself across the galaxy to the underdeveloped, medieval planet Expel.
  • 🔮 Rena Lanford: A sweet, compassionate girl living on Expel who possesses mysterious healing magic. When Claude rescues her from a monster using his sci-fi phase gun, she mistakes him for the legendary “Hero of Light” prophesied to save her world from a cataclysmic disaster called the Sorcery Globe.

⚙️ Key Mechanics & Portable Enhancements

  • Refined Real-Time Battles: Combat runs on an updated 3D engine matching First Departure. Normal attacks can now be chained into a 3-hit combo sequence, making physical brawling feel much smoother and faster than the original PS1 edition.
  • Welch Vineyard Joins the Roster: The remake adds Welch Vineyard—a recurring joke character in the Star Ocean universe—as an exclusive, fully recruitable party member equipped with her iconic handy-stick weapon.
  • Over 80 Unique Endings: Between Private Actions (PAs) and dynamic relationship mechanics (Affection and Respect stats), who you recruit and how you treat your party members changes dialogue options and branches out into dozens of distinct ending pairings.
  • Deep Crafting Engine: Features the series’ famous Item Creation system. Spending Skill Points (SP) lets your party cook, paint, forge weapons, write books, compose music, and customize high-tier gear to break game balance early if you master the recipes.

⭐ Short Review: The Definitive Portable JRPG

The Good

  • Exceptional Replay Value: Playing through as Claude versus Rena offers genuinely unique scenes, exclusive party recruits, and massive ending variety.
  • Addictive Gameplay Loop: Fast real-time combat paired with deep skill trees and Item Creation makes grinding and experimenting extremely satisfying.

The Bad

  • Spurt of End-Game Difficulty Spikes: Late-game bosses and optional bonus dungeons (like the Cave of Trials) require heavy tactical planning, level grinding, and specific gear crafting to survive.
  • World Map Navigation: Moving across the 3D world map without fast-travel early on can feel slightly slow and repetitive.
