Akuji the Heartless (1998) is a dark, gritty voodoo-themed action-adventure title that stands out as one of the most stylistically unique games on the PlayStation 1. Developed by Crystal Dynamics (right before they struck gold with Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver), the game features an edgy, atmospheric blend of platforming, hack-and-slash combat, and dark magic.

Story & Premise: Betrayal and Voodoo Magic

On his wedding day, a powerful voodoo priest and warrior prince named Akuji is brutally murdered by his own brother, Oris. Instead of finding peace, Akuji’s soul is cast into the deepest, darkest pits of the Underworld.

The Quest: While wandering hell, Akuji is contacted by his beloved bride, Kesho, who is still alive but trapped in transit by Oris’s dark machinations. Akuji strikes a desperate deal with Baron Samedi, the voodoo Lord of the Dead: if Akuji can traverse the torturous realms of hell and harvest the souls of his ancestors, Samedi will grant him passage back to the mortal realm to exact his bloody vengeance.

Key Gameplay Features

  • Gory Arm-Blade Combat: Akuji fights primarily using giant blades attached to his forearms, allowing for swift, satisfying combos against hellish monsters.

  • Voodoo Magic Arsenal: As you progress, you collect distinct magical spells cast from Akuji’s hands, including the Hellfire fireball, the defensive Shield, and the destructive Spirit Strike.

  • Ancestral Soul Collection: To unlock later stages and please Baron Samedi, you must thoroughly explore the twisting, vertical environments to locate hidden ancestral spirits and voodoo dolls.

  • Stellar Voice Acting: The game boasts fantastic production values, notably featuring the booming, charismatic voice of actor Richard Lawson as Baron Samedi.

  • Dark 90s Aesthetic: The level design is heavily inspired by Haitian voodoo mythology, bathed in eerie green, purple, and blood-red lighting, accompanied by an ominous tribal-industrial drum soundtrack.

Short Review: Crystal Dynamics’ Forgotten Cult Classic

The Good

  • Incredible Atmosphere: The world feels genuinely grim, macabre, and distinct from the standard medieval fantasy or sci-fi games of the era.

  • Tight Combat & Controls: Unlike many early 3D platformers, Akuji moves fluidly, and an auto-targeting system makes landing magical spells and jumps feel remarkably fair.

  • Creative Level Design: The levels make excellent use of vertical space, requiring you to slide down blood chutes, climb bone walls, and dodge massive meat grinders.

The Bad

  • Visual Limitations: Because the environments are so dark, texture compression can sometimes look incredibly muddy and pixelated on original hardware.

  • Repetitive Loop: The loop of “enter level, find X number of souls, fight boss” stays exactly the same from the first hour to the last.
