SSX On Tour (2005) brought EA Sports BIG’s iconic extreme snowboarding series to the PlayStation Portable. Serving as the fourth entry in the franchise, it overhauled the traditional SSX vibe by embracing a gritty, punk-rock “sketchbook” aesthetic and introducing skiing alongside classic snowboarding.
🏔️ Core Features & Gameplay Mechanics
- Skis Join the Mountain: For the first time in SSX history, players can choose to shred down slopes on twin-tip skis in addition to snowboards. Skiers pull off distinct, twin-tip spin and flip animations separate from boarders.
- Create-a-Rider & The Tour Mode: Instead of starting strictly with veteran characters like Elise or Mac, the primary campaign encourages you to build a custom amateur rider. You work your way up from a low-ranked local hill shredder to a mountain legend by earning hype points across events.
- The Monster Meter: Filling your boost gauge by pulling off big-air trick combinations unlocks Monster Tricks—over-the-top, physics-defying stunts like spinning your board like a helicopter blade or swinging off ski lifts mid-air.
🕹️ PSP-Exclusive Content & Port Adjustments
Bringing a massive open-mountain console game to a handheld required a few structural tweaks, but EA Canada packed the PSP release with unique content:
- “Quick Play” Shred Mode: Built specifically for short handheld sessions, allowing you to jump instantly into point attack or race events without navigating the full Tour map.
- Exclusive Tracks & Collectibles: Includes tracks tuned specifically for the handheld and unique PSP-exclusive character gear sets.
- Ad-Hoc Wireless Play: Head-to-head multiplayer lets you race or battle for trick high scores against up to 4 players over local wireless connection.
⭐ Short Review: High-Speed Handheld Shredding
The Good
- Phenomenal Sense of Speed: Pushing down the mountain at top speed while landing massive Monster Tricks feels fast, responsive, and thrilling on the PSP screen.
- Great Customization: Building a custom skier or snowboarder and upgrading their stats and gear provides a great sense of progression.
The Bad
- Broken-Up Mountain: Unlike the seamless single-mountain descent of SSX 3, On Tour relies on individual track loads, which means frequent UMD loading screens between events.
- Simplified Tricks vs Consoles: Because the PSP lacks dual analog sticks, trick inputs are remapped to face buttons and directional pad combinations, making high-end combo strings slightly less intuitive than on home consoles.
