Spider-Man: Friend or Foe (2007) is a lighthearted, side-scrolling beat-’em-up tailored for the PlayStation Portable. Heavily inspired by the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy movies but wrapped in a stylized, cartoonish aesthetic, this title breaks the standard superhero mold by forcing Spider-Man to team up with his most iconic archenemies to stop a global threat.
πΈοΈ The Premise: Symbiotes and P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s
While fighting a combined ambush by Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Sandman, and Venom, Spider-Man and his foes are suddenly attacked by a swarm of mysterious, holographic, alien-like creatures called P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s (Perpetual Holographic Attack Nano-Technology Offensive Monsters).
During the chaos, a mysterious figure in a flying command center extracts Spider-Man. This benefactor is Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury reveals that the meteor that brought the Venom symbiote broke into shards across the world, and someone is using them to mind-control Spidey’s villains and build an army of P.H.A.N.T.O.M.s. Armed with a S.H.I.E.L.D. teleporter, Spider-Man travels to global hotspots to defeat the brainwashed villains, free them, and recruit them into his personal strike team.
πΉοΈ Gameplay Loop: Tag-Team Brawling
Unlike the open-world web-swinging games on consoles, Friend or Foe on the PSP plays as a linear isometric brawler.
- The Sidekick System: You don’t fight alone. Before dropping into a stage, you select a unlocked marvel character to serve as your active sidekick. In single-player mode, you can instantly swap control between Spider-Man and your sidekick with the press of a button, letting you chain together massive character combinations.
- Defeat to Recruit: The progression system relies on boss battles. You fly to locations like Tokyo, Egypt, Transylvania, and Nepal. Once you defeat a mind-controlled villain at the end of a zone, the mind-control device shatters, and they join your roster back on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier.
- Upgrades and Tokens: As you smash through breakable objects and defeat enemies, you collect red and green tech tokens. You spend these tokens back on the Helicarrier to buy new combat moves, increase health bars, or upgrade Spider-Man’s specific web-shooters (like web-stunning, web-pulling, or explosive web-bombs).
π₯ The Playable Roster

β Short Review: A Fun, Yet Repetitive Brawler
The Good
- Fun Character Dynamic: Playing as villains like Venom or Green Goblin alongside Spider-Man provides a highly entertaining change of pace. The campy dialogue between characters on the Helicarrier is genuinely funny.
- Solid Handheld Co-op: The game features local Ad-Hoc multiplayer, allowing two friends to play through the entire campaign together, with one controlling Spider-Man and the other handling the sidekick.
The Bad
- Extremely Repetitive Combat: Stages follow a very predictable formula: walk forward, get trapped in a small arena by energy barriers, defeat three waves of identical P.H.A.N.T.O.M. variants, and repeat. It can get monotonous very quickly.
- Very Easy Difficulty: Because it was designed with a younger audience in mind, the game lacks a steep learning curve. Enemies rarely pose a severe threat, and puzzle sections are simple button-pressing sequences.
