Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron (2009) is the third and final Battlefront title released for the PlayStation Portable. Developed by Rebellion Developments (who also made Battlefront: Renegade Squadron), the game holds a unique place in Star Wars gaming history: it is heavily built upon recycled assets, campaign concepts, and mechanics from the infamous, cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III home console project.

📖 Story Campaign: The Tale of X2 and X1

Unlike previous portable Battlefront titles that relied on generic skirmish setups, Elite Squadron features a full story-driven campaign spanning decades—from the Clone Wars through the Galactic Civil War and beyond.

You play as X2, an elite Force-sensitive Clone Trooper created from the DNA of a Jedi Master. Along with his clone brother, X1, X2 fights under Jedi Master Kota during the Clone Wars. However, when Order 66 is issued, X1 embraces the Empire while X2 rejects it, joining the Rebel Alliance. The brothers’ rivalry plays out across galactic battlefields as X1 rises in the Imperial ranks while X2 trains to master his Force abilities and stop his brother’s dark ambitions.

🚀 The Seamless Land-to-Space Combat Loop

The hallmark feature of Elite Squadron—and its biggest technical achievement on PSP—was bringing multi-tiered, simultaneous combat zones to a single match map:

  • Ground Combat: Capture command posts, manage infantry, and pilot land vehicles (like AT-STs or AATs) on planetary surfaces.
  • Atmospheric Transition: Hop into an X-Wing, TIE Fighter, or Gunship from a hangar bay and fly straight up into upper orbit to enter space dogfights.
  • Capital Ship Boarding: Fly directly inside an enemy Star Destroyer or Mon Calamari Cruiser’s hangar bay, land your ship, disembark on foot, and fight through interior corridors to sabotage reactor cores from within.

⚙️ Customization & Game Modes

  • Deep Character Customization: Ditching fixed class structures, Elite Squadron allows you to fully customize loadouts. You pick gender, species, armor visual styles, primary weapons, heavy explosives, sidearms, and passive perk abilities.
  • Galactic Conquest: The fan-favorite strategy mode returns, allowing you to move fleets across a galaxy map, manage credits, purchase planetary buffs, and invade territories to conquer the galaxy.
  • Hero Assault: Playable heroes and villains return with Force powers and lightsaber mechanics, including Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Emperor Palpatine, Han Solo, and Mace Windu.
  • 16-Player Multiplayer: Supported local Ad-Hoc and online Infrastructure play (until server shutdowns) with bot fill options for offline skirmishes.

⭐ Short Review: Ambitious Scope, Hardware Bottlenecks

The Good

  • Unmatched Operational Scale: Integrating ground infantry, starfighter flight, and capital ship boarding within a single handheld match felt ahead of its time.
  • Rich Single-Player Content: Combining a story campaign with Galactic Conquest and deep loadout customization offers massive offline replay value.

The Bad

  • Control Limitations: Navigating both foot movement and free-look targeting on the single-analog PSP hardware requires getting used to lock-on systems or awkward button-aiming mapping.
  • Frequent Cutscene Loading: Transitioning between land and space utilizes cinematic hyperspace/orbit cutscenes to mask necessary UMD loading breaks.
