Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (2007) on the PlayStation Portable brings Ubisoft’s flagship tactical squad shooter franchise to a handheld format. Developed by High Voltage Software, this version ditches the first-person perspective of its PC counterpart and the third-person over-the-shoulder view of its PS3/Xbox 360 siblings in favor of an arcade-style top-down tactical shooter perspective.

🇲🇽 Story & Setting: The US-Mexico Border Crisis

Set in 2014, directly following the events of the first Advanced Warfighter, you take command of Captain Scott Mitchell, leader of the US Army’s elite “Ghosts” unit.

A rogue Mexican rebel faction, armed with stolen weapons of mass destruction, threatens to breach the US-Mexico border near Juarez and El Paso, Texas. Across a 12-mission campaign, Mitchell and his team must operate behind enemy lines to neutralize missile threats, rescue hostages, and dismantle the rebel command network before a full-scale war breaks out.

⚙️ Core Gameplay & Mechanics

  • Top-Down Perspective: The action is viewed from a high isometric overhead camera angle, giving you a full field of view over surrounding cover, enemy positions, and patrol routes.
  • Cross-Com & Squad Controls: Utilizing the signature Cross-Com system, you command a 2-man squad (typically a rifleman, heavy gunner, or sniper). Using simple directional pad inputs, you can order team members to move to cover, suppress targets, hold positions, or breach compounds.
  • Cover-Based Gunplay: Running into open firefights will quickly result in death. You must utilize walls, sandbags, and burned-out vehicles for cover, waiting for reloading intervals or flanking opportunities.
  • High-Tech Support Assets: Certain missions allow you to paint targets for orbital airstrikes, call in artillery drops, or pilot the Mule (an armored unmanned supply vehicle) to resupply ammo and field repairs.

⭐ Short Review: Accessible Arcade Action, Reduced Depth

The Good

  • Pick-Up-and-Play Controls: The top-down perspective translates very cleanly to the PSP’s single-analog setup, making targeting and movement smooth and intuitive.
  • Solid Mission Variety: Incorporates a good mix of stealth infiltration, hostage rescue, vehicle escorts, and heavy firefights.

The Bad

  • Lacks Hardcore Tactical Depth: Compared to the console/PC releases, squad tactics are significantly simplified, making it feel more like an arcade action shooter than a realistic military simulator.
  • No Multiplayer Modes: Unlike many other PSP tactical shooters, GRAW 2 on PSP lacks any wireless multiplayer or co-op functionality.
