Arc the Lad II (1996) is widely considered the absolute pinnacle of the Arc the Lad franchise and one of the darkest, most expansive tactical RPGs on the PlayStation 1. Developed by G-Craft and published by Sony, it was a massive critical and commercial success in Japan.

While Japanese gamers received it a year after the original, Western players finally got to experience its staggering depth in 2002 when Working Designs localized it as the massive centerpiece of the Arc the Lad Collection. The game takes the fast-paced grid combat of the first entry and expands it into a monumental, 50+ hour political and supernatural epic.

Story & Premise: The World on Fire

The narrative begins from the perspective of a brand-new protagonist named Elc, a cynical and fiercely capable young Hunter. Elc is a survivor of the Pyron clan, a nomadic tribe slaughtered by a sinister, hidden global shadow organization. Haunted by nightmares of his past, Elc works out of the bustling metropolis of Prodias, taking on mercenary contracts to track down criminals and monsters.

The Convergence: Elc’s path violently collides with Lieza, a gentle girl who possesses the rare, forbidden ability to tame wild monsters. While protecting Lieza from the corrupt military, Elc crosses paths with Arc, the hero of the first game, who is now wrongfully labeled as the world’s most wanted international terrorist. As their factions unite, they realize that the corrupt Romalia Empire is constructing horrific genetic “Monster Factories” to artificially trigger a global apocalypse.

“Prepare yourself for a staggering tactical RPG odyssey that is massive in both scope and heart! Arc the Lad II takes everything that made the original great and blows it wide open.

Step into a sprawling, interconnected world where corporate corruption, forbidden voodoo sciences, and ancient gods collide. Take control of a combined roster of 14 playable characters in highly strategic, grid-based tactical combat. For the first time, venture off the battlefield to freely explore massive towns, take on dangerous side contracts via the Hunters Guild, and capture wild beasts to fight alongside you.

Your decisions from the past will haunt the present. Will you stand against the Empire?

Key Gameplay Features

  • Freely Explorable World: Unlike the first game, which limited movement to a linear map select screen, Arc the Lad II functions like a traditional RPG. You can freely walk through massive futuristic cities, explore dangerous open-world wilderness zones, and hunt for hidden dungeons.
  • The Hunters Guild System: A massive gameplay pillar. Players can visit local taverns to accept bounty hunts, solve localized mysteries, and complete side quests. This system provides a constant stream of rare equipment, crafting materials, and gold.
  • Monster Taming & Breeding: Utilizing Lieza’s unique voodoo abilities, players can physically tame almost any standard enemy monster encountered on the battlefield. These monsters can be named, equipped with custom items, leveled up, and deployed as permanent combat party members.
  • Save File Import (The Conversion): If you import a completed save file from the first Arc the Lad, the game rewards you with incredible narrative continuity. Character levels, bonus stats, and exclusive hidden accessories carry over perfectly, and specific side quests alter based on your past accomplishments.
  • Deep Class & Weapon Mastery: Characters now gain individual proficiency levels with specific weapon classes (Swords, Spears, Guns, Claws). Consistently using a weapon unlocks unique weapon-specific combat skills and status-inflicting techniques.

Short Review: A Dark, Masterful Tactical Landmark

The Good

  • Staggering Narrative Depth: The story is beautifully written, incredibly gritty, and emotionally unyielding. It deals with harrowing themes like genetic experimentation, human trafficking, political assassinations, and total societal collapse.
  • Incredible Scale: The jump in content size is astronomical. Going from the first game’s 10-hour run time to a sprawling 60-hour epic packed with side-content gives the sequel a monumental feel.
  • Flawless Pixel Art Animation: Matrix Software and G-Craft refined their 2D engine to perfection. The visual spell effects look gorgeous, and the combat sprites move with fluid, arcade-quality frame rates.

The Bad

Inventory Limitations: Managing your items can occasionally feel clunky and tedious due to rigid menu carrying capacities, especially once you begin juggling gear between 14 human characters and an army of tamed monsters.

Brutal End-Game Grind: The final dungeons and bosses feature sharp, unforgiving difficulty spikes. If you haven’t spent ample time completing Hunters Guild bounties or leveling up your gear, you will find yourself forced to halt progress to grind for hours.
