BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable (2010) is a technical powerhouse for the PSP. Developed by Arc System Works (the team behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ), it successfully ported the high-definition 2D visuals of the PS3 version to the handheld, complete with a massive story mode and new, exclusive content.

Game Story & Premise

The story takes place in the 13th Hierarchical City of Kagutsuchi. The world is governed by the NOL (Novus Orbis Librarium), a military group that controls magic.

Back Cover Description:

“The wheel of fate is turning! Experience the breathtaking 2D fighting phenomenon on the go. When Ragna the Bloodedge, a rebel with the highest bounty in history, appears in the city of Kagutsuchi, warriors from across the globe converge to claim his head—or join his cause. With a deep, branching Story Mode, the all-new Legion Mode, and every frame of the legendary console animation intact, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger Portable is the ultimate handheld fighter. Master the ‘Drive’ system to unleash unique character abilities and fulfill your destiny. The Azure is calling…”

PSP Exclusive: Legion Mode

The biggest addition to the Portable version is Legion Mode. It adds a strategic, map-based layer to the fighting:

  • You start by choosing a main character to lead your “army.”

  • You move across a grid-based map, battling enemies at different “nodes.”

  • Recruitment: When you defeat an enemy team, you can recruit one of their members to join your legion.

  • Management: You must manage your team’s health and strategically pick who fights next to conquer the entire map.

Secret Unlocks & Shop

Unlike the console version where “Unlimited” characters (boss versions) were largely DLC, in the PSP version, you unlock almost everything via the In-Game Shop using “P$,” which you earn by playing any mode.

How to Unlock “Unlimited” Characters

Unlimited characters have increased health, faster meters, and modified moves (e.g., Unlimited Ragna is permanently in his “Blood Kain” state).

  • Beat Arcade Mode: Successfully completing Arcade Mode with a specific character usually unlocks their Unlimited version in the shop for purchase.

  • The “All” Pack: Some versions allow you to unlock all Unlimited characters at once by completing the Legion Mode on the hardest difficulty.

Astral Heats (Instant Kills)

Astral Heats are flashy finishing moves that end the round instantly.

  • To Unlock: You must complete the Story Mode for that specific character to 100% or buy the unlock in the shop.

  • To Execute: You must be on the final round, have 100% Heat Gauge, and the opponent must have less than 20% HP.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Drive System: Every character has a unique “Drive” (mapped to the Circle button). For example, Ragna’s “Soul Eater” heals him on hit, while Jin’s “Frost Bite” freezes opponents in ice.

  • Barrier Burst: A “get out of jail free” card. If you are being pressured, you can blast the opponent away, but you lose your defensive barrier for the rest of the round.

  • Distortion Drives: The game’s version of “Super Moves,” consuming 50% of your Heat Gauge for massive damage.

Short Review: High-Def Portability

The Good

  • Incredible Visuals: Despite the PSP’s lower resolution, the sprites are sharp, and the background art is beautiful.

  • Content Heavy: The Story Mode is massive, featuring fully voiced dialogue and branching paths based on how you win or lose fights.

  • Legion Mode: Adds hours of replayability that wasn’t present in the original console version.

The Bad

  • D-Pad Strain: BlazBlue requires very precise inputs (circles and zig-zags). Doing this on the PSP D-pad can be tough on the thumbs after a while.

  • Loading Times: Transitioning between the long story segments and fights can take a few seconds longer than on a console.
