Elminage Original (2011) is a hardcore, old-school first-person dungeon crawler (DRPG) that serves as a spiritual successor to the classic Wizardry series. Released late in the PSP’s life, it became a cult favorite for fans of high-fantasy masochism and deep party customization.

The Premise: The Six Rings

The story is classic high fantasy with a “sandbox” twist. The world of Haldarpa is protected by five barriers, but the “Six Rings” that power them have been scattered.

  • The Mission: You create a party of six adventurers to recover these rings.

  • Non-Linearity: Unlike most RPGs, you aren’t funneled down a single path. Once the intro is over, you can tackle the game’s many dungeons in almost any order.

  • The “Fame” System: You progress the story by earning “Fame” through quests, which you then spend to track the location of the missing rings.

Key Features: The “Style Load” System

Elminage is famous for its “User Generated Content” features that were very rare on the PSP:

  • Face Load / Style Load: You could put your own images (BMP files) on your PSP’s Memory Stick and import them into the game as character portraits. You could literally play as yourself, your favorite anime characters, or even memes.

  • Deep Customization: Features 16 classes (from standard Fighters to unique roles like Bards, Valkyries, and Servants) and 9 races.

  • Vancian Magic: Uses a “spell slot” system rather than a standard MP pool—once you use your high-level spells, you have to return to an Inn to rest.

  • Classic “Wizardry” Rules: Features permanent death (if you fail a resurrection), age mechanics (characters can get old and lose stats), and traps that can wipe your entire party in one turn.

The Gameplay: Grid-Based Exploration

  • The First-Person View: You navigate 3D wireframe or tiled dungeons, mapping out every square to find hidden doors and shortcuts.

  • Turn-Based Combat: Battles are fast and lethal. Positioning matters, as only characters in the front row can use short-range melee weapons.

  • Alchemy: A massive crafting system allows you to disassemble loot and reforge it with powerful elemental properties.

Short Review: Not for the Faint of Heart

The Good

  • Ultimate Freedom: The ability to build any team and go anywhere is incredibly liberating compared to “hand-holding” modern RPGs.

  • Portrait Import: The “Style Load” feature adds a personal connection to your party that makes their potential permanent death feel much more impactful.

  • Longevity: If you enjoy the grind, there are hundreds of hours of gameplay, including massive post-game super-dungeons.

The Bad

  • Extreme Difficulty: The game is “unfriendly.” You can be ambushed and wiped out in the very first dungeon if you aren’t careful.

  • Minimalist Presentation: Most of the story is told through text menus and static portraits. Don’t expect flashy cutscenes.

  • The “Search” Mechanic: Finding the rings involves a lot of trial and error and menu navigation that can feel tedious without a guide.
