Daxter (2006) is a standout title in the PSP library, developed by Ready at Dawn (who later made God of War: Ghost of Sparta). It takes place during the two-year gap seen in the opening cinematic of Jak II, finally answering the question: what was Daxter actually doing while Jak was in prison?
Game Story & Premise
For the first time, the “sidekick” takes center stage in a solo adventure that bridges the gap between Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy and Jak II.
Back Cover Description:
“It’s finally his turn! Daxter is on his own in Haven City, and he’s got a lot of cleaning up to do. With Jak locked away in Baron Praxis’ prison, the world’s most famous Ottsel must go undercover as an exterminator to sniff out clues and rescue his best friend.
Armed with his trusty bug-swatter and a high-tech pesticide tank, Daxter must crawl, leap, and hover through a massive city infested with Metal Head bugs. From the industrial streets to the lush hotels, nowhere is safe. But being a hero isn’t all work—take a break in Daxter’s dreams where he becomes the star of his own action movies. It’s time for the orange one to shine!”

Key Gameplay Mechanics
-
Pesticide Tank: Daxter’s primary tool. It can be used as a flamethrower, a sonic pulse, or a jetpack to hover over gaps.
-
Vehicle Sections: Includes high-speed chases and flight missions through Haven City’s transit system.
-
Jak X Connection: If you connect your PSP to a PS2 running Jak X: Combat Racing, you can unlock the Daxter Mobile in Jak X and a “Bearded Daxter” skin in this game.
Short Review: The Ottsel’s Finest Hour
The Good
-
Visual Showcase: In 2006, this was widely considered the best-looking game on the PSP. The character animations are expressive and fluid.
-
Humor: The writing captures Daxter’s wit perfectly, especially in the parody dream sequences.
-
Platforming: The controls are tight and responsive, feeling exactly like the PS2 Jak games.
The Bad
-
Camera: Without a second analog stick, you have to use the L and R buttons to rotate the camera, which can be tricky during precision platforming.
-
Difficulty: Some of the later extermination missions have a sharp difficulty spike that might frustrate younger players.
