Final Fantasy Reishiki (2011)—better known in the West as Final Fantasy Type-0—is the “darkest” entry in the franchise. Originally released on two UMDs for the PSP, it was the first Final Fantasy to receive an “M” rating for its brutal, unflinching portrayal of war and the emotional weight of a world that literally forgets the dead.

The Story: Class Zero and the Crimson Codex

The game is set in the world of Orience, where four nations—each possessing a magical Crystal—are locked in a devastating world war.

  • The Protagonists: You control Class Zero, a group of 14 elite students from the Rubrum magical academy. They are “Agito” candidates—prophesied saviors who are immune to the magical interference that jams other nations’ magic.

  • The “Memory” Hook: In this world, the moment someone dies, everyone’s memory of them is erased by the Crystals. This ensures that soldiers keep fighting without the burden of grief, but it leads to a hauntingly cold atmosphere where Class Zero struggles to find meaning in their own existence.

Key Gameplay Features

  • 14 Unique Playable Characters: Unlike most FFs, you have 14 distinct combat styles available from the start. Each is named after a playing card (Ace uses cards, Seven uses a whip-sword, King uses dual pistols, etc.).

  • Kill-Sight System: Combat is real-time and fast-paced. If you time your strike during a yellow or red lock-on (the “Killsight”), you deal massive damage or trigger an instant kill.

  • Phantoma Harvesting: When an enemy dies, you “harvest” their soul (Phantoma). This restores your MP and provides crafting materials for magic.

  • Eidolons (Summons): In Type-0, summoning a god like Ifrit or Bahamut requires a blood sacrifice. The character who summons the Eidolon dies for the remainder of the mission.

  • RTS Skirmishes: Occasionally, the game shifts to a real-time strategy mode on the world map where you lead armies to capture enemy cities.

PSP vs. HD Remaster: Which to play?

While the HD version is more accessible, many purists still prefer the PSP original.

Feature PSP Original HD Remaster (PS4/PC)
Multiplayer Included (3-player ad-hoc co-op) Removed (AI only)
Camera Controlled with D-Pad (clunky) Full right-stick support
Visuals Masterful for PSP (2 UMDs) Upscaled but “flat” in places
Difficulty High / Unforgiving Added “Easy” mode

Short Review: The Grimdark Final Fantasy

The Good

  • Emotional Impact: The ending is widely considered one of the most powerful and tear-jerking in the entire series.

  • Combat Variety: Switching between 14 characters keeps the gameplay fresh for the entire 40-hour campaign.

  • The OST: Takeharu Ishimoto’s soundtrack is epic, choral, and intense, perfectly matching the “war documentary” vibe.

The Bad

  • The Camera: On a real PSP, managing the camera with the D-pad while fighting in 360 degrees is a physical struggle.

  • Missable Content: The game uses a “Time” system between missions. If you don’t talk to the right NPC at the right hour, you can miss massive chunks of lore and character development.
