Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (2007) is the game that proved the PSP was the perfect home for the “Strategy RPG” genre. It is an enhanced port of the original PS2 classic, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, offering hundreds of hours of tactical depth, absurd humor, and a level cap that reaches into the stratosphere.

Game Story & Premise

Welcome to the Netherworld, a place where the concepts of “good” and “evil” are completely flipped.

The Plot: Laharl, the prince of the Netherworld, wakes up from a two-year nap only to discover that his father, King Krichevskoy, has died (by choking on a blood pretzel). In his absence, the Netherworld has fallen into chaos with every minor demon claiming the throne. Alongside his devious vassal Etna and a suspiciously airheaded angel-in-training named Flonne, Laharl sets out to reclaim his birthright and prove he is the rightful Overlord.

Back Cover Description

EVIL HAS NEVER LOOKED THIS GOOD!

“Wake up, Prince Laharl! The King is dead, the throne is up for grabs, and your vassals are already looking for your replacement. It’s time to show these demons who’s boss in the definitive version of the RPG that started it all!

Experience the twisted tale of the Netherworld with all-new features exclusive to the PSP. Take control of the snarky Etna in the brand-new Etna Mode, or challenge your friends in Ad-Hoc Multiplayer battles. With a level cap of 9,999, damage numbers in the millions, and the infinite depths of the Item World, your quest for total domination starts now.

The Netherworld is waiting. Will you be its savior… or its most stylish tyrant?

PSP Exclusive Features: Why it’s “Afternoon”

This version added several key features that weren’t in the PS2 original:

  • Etna Mode: A “What If?” scenario where Etna accidentally kills Laharl at the start of the game. It features new dialogue, unique story beats, and a much higher starting difficulty.

  • Multiplayer: Support for Ad-Hoc Wireless battles, allowing you to pit your custom-leveled team against a friend’s.

  • Data Shop: A new NPC that tracks your stats, including max damage dealt, number of items collected, and how many times you’ve bribed the Dark Assembly.

  • Record Shop: Allows you to listen to the game’s iconic soundtrack and re-watch unlocked story cinematics.

  • Performance Tweak: Added a “battle skip” and “fast-forward” option to speed up the animations during the heavy grinding phases.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • The Dark Assembly: Want to unlock a new class? Want the enemies to be stronger? You have to pass a bill in the demon senate. If they vote “No,” you can choose to “Persuade by Force” and fight the entire senate to get your way.

  • Lifting and Throwing: Characters can pick up and throw allies or enemies. Throwing an ally can help them cross large gaps, while throwing enemies into each other can fuse them into higher-level monsters.

  • The Item World: Every item (even a piece of gum) contains a randomly generated 100-floor dungeon. Beating floors levels up the item itself.

  • Geo Panels: Special colored tiles on the floor that grant effects like “Invincibility,” “EXP +100%,” or “Death.” Mastering how to manipulate or destroy these is the key to winning tough maps.

Short Review: The “Forever” Game

The Good

  • Infinite Replayability: Between the Item World and the post-game bosses (like Baal), you could play this for a decade and still find ways to optimize your team.

  • Hilarious Writing: The interactions between Laharl, Etna, and the Prinny squad (the explosive penguin servants) are genuinely funny and subvert classic RPG tropes.

  • Perfect Port: The 2D sprites look crisp on the PSP screen, and the loading times are significantly improved over the PS2.

The Bad

  • The Grind is Real: This game is famous (or infamous) for the grind. If you aren’t a fan of repeating maps to “see numbers go up,” the post-game might feel like a chore.

  • No “Magichange”: Since this is a port of the first game, it lacks some of the quality-of-life mechanics introduced in later sequels like Disgaea 2.
