Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (2007) is a landmark title for the PSP, as it was the first time the high-octane PS2 series was successfully shrunk down for a handheld. Developed by High Impact Games (a studio formed by ex-Insomniac employees), it remains one of the best-selling and most technically impressive games on the platform.

  • Key Feature: The first Ratchet & Clank game to introduce a Modular Armor System where collecting specific sets grants unique elemental buffs.

The “Tiny” Conflict

While vacationing on Planet Pokitaru, Ratchet and Clank meet a young girl named Luna who is kidnapped by mysterious robots. Their rescue mission leads them to rediscover the Technomites, a race of microscopic geniuses that most of the galaxy believed were just a myth.

  • The Antagonist: Otto Destruct, the leader of the Technomites, who plans to use his shrinking technology to harvest the intelligence of the galaxy’s greatest heroes.

📝 Game Description

Despite the handheld move, the game retains the signature “Ratchet” feel: massive weapons, chaotic bolts flying everywhere, and witty banter.

Gameplay Pillars:

  • The Armor System: Unlike previous games where you just bought “Armor V1, V2, etc.,” here you find individual pieces (Helmet, Chest, Gloves, Boots) in hidden areas. Equipping a full matching set—like the Wildfire or Stalker armor—gives your wrench elemental effects or boosts your damage.

  • Classic & New Weapons: You have an arsenal of 13 weapons. Staples like the Agents of Doom and the Suck Cannon return, joined by new ones like the Mootator (turns enemies into cows) and the Laser Tracer.

  • Clank Gameplay: Clank has his own dedicated sections, including “Gadgebot” puzzles (similar to Lemmings) and high-octane Giant Clank space combat sequences.

  • Minigames: The game breaks up the platforming with Skyboard Racing and a vehicular “Destruction Derby” arena.

⭐ Short Review: A PS2 Console in Your Pocket

The Good

  • Technical Marvel: It looks and plays remarkably like the PS2 entries. The character models are sharp, and the 60 FPS target makes the shooting feel smooth despite the hardware.

  • High Replayability: Between the Challenge Mode (New Game+), the Titan Weapon upgrades, and 25 hidden Skill Points, there is a lot of incentive to play through the game multiple times.

  • Creative Levels: Stages like the “Hallucination” sequence (where you fight through Ratchet’s memories) or the shrunken-down levels inside Clank’s body are series highlights.

The Bad

  • Camera Controls: Because the PSP lacks a second analog stick, you have to use the L/R triggers to rotate the camera. It’s functional but can feel “stiff” in tight corridors or during chaotic boss fights.

  • Difficulty Spikes: The final boss (Otto Destruct) and the last few planets are notoriously difficult, often requiring you to grind for better armor or weapon levels to survive.

  • Short Campaign: While the quality is high, a focused player can reach the credits in about 6–8 hours, though Challenge Mode extends this significantly.
