Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover (2006) is not a direct port of the PS2/Xbox classic; it is a prequel that takes place before the events of the original game. While it retains the brutal combat and star-studded roster, it introduces a new story and mechanical tweaks specifically for the PSP.
The Plot: The Prequel
Instead of freeing D-Mob from a police van (as in the console version), you save the tattoo artist Manny from corrupt cops.
-
The Takeover: You are mentored by a gang leader named O.G. and tasked with taking over the five boroughs of NYC.
-
The Twist: The story reveals how D-Mob originally rose to power and the betrayal that set the stage for the later games in the series.
-
Presentation: Unlike the console versions, the story is told through stylized comic book panels instead of 3D cutscenes to save space on the UMD.
Key Features & Changes
-
Mount & Pound: A new mechanic for the PSP. You can now jump onto a downed opponent and punch them repeatedly. However, the opponent can reverse this and flip the situation on you.
-
Dirty Moves: The PSP version adds more “dirty” environmental attacks, like eye-gouging or using the crowd to slam an opponent’s head.
-
Missing Modes: Due to hardware limitations, the 4-Player Free-for-All and Tag Team matches were removed. Fights are strictly 1-on-1.
-
Venues: Includes four exclusive stages not found in the console versions, such as an alleyway and a barge on the Hudson River.

The Good
-
Technical Marvel: The character models and textures are incredibly high-quality for the PSP, looking nearly identical to the PS2 version.
-
The Combat: It retains the deep “Style” system (Wrestling, Street Fighting, Martial Arts, Submission, and Kickboxing), allowing you to mix up to three styles for custom combos.
-
Soundtrack: Features the full, uncensored hip-hop soundtrack from the console version.
The Bad
-
Limited Scope: The lack of 4-player matches makes the “Battle Royal” and “Tag” fans feel left out.
-
Comic Cutscenes: While the art is good, the lack of voice-acted 3D cutscenes makes the story feel a bit less immersive than the console predecessor.
-
Loading: Frequent loading screens between the gym, the shop, and the fights can break the flow of the “Takeover” mode.
