Split/Second (known as Split/Second: Velocity in Europe) on the PlayStation Portable is a high-octane portable port of the 2010 console arcade racing game. Ported to the PSP by Sumo Digital (original console game developed by Black Rock Studio), the game translates the TV-show theme and environmental destruction mechanics into a handheld format.

📺 Premise & Core Mechanics: The Reality TV Show

The game sets you up as a contestant on a fictional, explosive reality TV racing show. Instead of using traditional weapons (like rockets or spikes) or standard nitro boosts, you fill a Power Play Meter by drifting, drafting behind opponents, jumping, and pulling off close dodges.

Once filled, you trigger Power Plays—environmentally triggered traps that sabotage rival racers or alter the track layout:

  • Level 1 Power Plays: Trigger smaller localized traps like exploding fuel trucks, falling construction cranes, collapsing billboards, or opening temporary shortcuts.
  • Level 2 Power Plays (Route Changers): Trigger massive disasters that permanently transform the course layout—such as collapsing a radio tower across the road, bringing down a bridge, or dropping an airplane onto the runway.

🏎️ Game Modes

  • Season Mode: Structured like a 12-episode reality TV show, featuring progression across multiple event types:
    • Race: Standard positioning race with Power Play traps enabled.
    • Detonator: A solo time-trial lap where the environment automatically explodes around you, forcing precision driving.
    • Elimination: A countdown timer periodically eliminates the racer in last place until only one survives.
    • Survival: Race through traffic while dodging barrels dropped from the back of moving semi-trucks.
    • Air Strike / Air Attack: Dodge incoming missile strikes launched from an attack helicopter hovering over the track.
  • Local Multiplayer: Supports 4-player local Ad-Hoc wireless racing.
  • PSP-Exclusive Track: Features an extra track environment designed specifically for the handheld version.

⭐ Short Review: Impressive Port with Technical Trade-offs

The Good

  • Faithful Adaptation: Sumo Digital successfully captured the console version’s core gameplay, UI, HUD-less camera design, and explosion-driven mechanics on the PSP hardware.
  • Fast-Paced Pick-Up-and-Play: The episode-based structure fits handheld gaming well, allowing for quick 3-to-5-minute gameplay sessions.

The Bad

  • Visual Downgrades & Scale: The PSP hardware scales down particle effects, texture resolution, and draw distance compared to the PS3/Xbox 360 versions.
  • Aggressive AI Rubber-Banding: Opponents tend to catch up easily regardless of lead distance, making late-race mistakes unforgiving.
