The Idolm@ster SP: Perfect Sun is the “energetic” counterpart to Wandering Star. While the core mechanics remain the same across the SP trilogy, this version features the series’ most iconic “frontline” idols and a very different rival dynamic.
The “Perfect Sun” Roster
This version is often recommended for beginners because it features the “main trio” of the franchise:
-
Haruka Amami: The clumsy but hardworking “center” and face of the series.
-
Makoto Kikuchi: The “prince” of 765 Pro, a girl with a massive female fanbase who actually wants to be more feminine.
-
Yayoi Takatsuki: The high-energy, cheerful girl from a large, low-income family (famous for her “High Touch!” high-fives).
-
The Rival: Hibiki Ganaha, an energetic, animal-loving breakout star from Okinawa representing 961 Production.
📝 Game Description
You take on the role of a producer at 765 Production. Your goal is to manage your chosen idol’s schedule over 52 weeks (in Free Mode) or through the scripted Story Mode to win the “Idol Ultimate” (IU) championship.
Gameplay Pillars:
-
The Routine: Every morning starts with a greeting. Your response affects the idol’s “Tension” for the day. High tension makes lessons and auditions much easier.
-
Mini-Game Lessons: You play rhythm and memory games to sharpen your idol’s Vocal, Dance, and Visual stats. In Perfect Sun, the difficulty spikes quickly as you hit Rank C and above.
-
The Rivalry: In Story Mode, you will frequently cross paths with Hibiki Ganaha. Unlike the cold rivalry in Wandering Star, the rivalry here is hot-blooded and competitive, fitting the “Sun” theme.
-
Customization: Use points to buy outfits and accessories. These aren’t just cosmetic; they provide essential stat boosts needed to pass high-level auditions.
⭐ Short Review: The “Classic” Experience
The Good
-
The Definitive Cast: If you want the “true” Idolm@ster experience, Haruka, Makoto, and Yayoi are the most balanced and lovable starting points for the series.
-
Hibiki is a Great Rival: Hibiki is arguably the most likable rival in the SP trilogy. Her interactions with the 765 girls are entertaining rather than purely antagonistic.
-
Fan Accessibility: Because this is the most popular version, it was the first to receive a full English fan translation, making it the most accessible entry for Westerners.
The Bad
-
The “Makoto Difficulty”: Fans often note that Makoto’s path can be surprisingly unforgiving in the later stages, requiring very precise stat management.
-
Grind-Heavy: To see the best endings, you’ll be repeating the same six mini-games dozens of times.
-
Dated Graphics: While the 3D models are charming, the background environments are static 2D images, showing the limitations of the PSP hardware.
Verdict: Perfect Sun is the “Standard Edition” of the SP series. It has the most recognizable characters and a high-energy story. It’s the perfect place to start if you’re new to the Producer life.
