Metal Slug Anthology (2007) is the ultimate tribute to SNK’s legendary run-and-gun series. Released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the franchise, this collection brings together seven arcade-perfect (mostly) titles onto a single UMD, making it one of the best values on the PSP.
The Included Games
The anthology features every main entry released up to that point:
-
Metal Slug
-
Metal Slug 2
-
Metal Slug X (A remixed, “fixed” version of MS2)
-
Metal Slug 3 (Widely considered the peak of the series)
-
Metal Slug 4
-
Metal Slug 5
-
Metal Slug 6 (The first console appearance of the Atomiswave arcade hit)
Game Story & Premise
While each game has its own specific missions, the overarching plot follows the Peregrine Falcon (PF) Squad—usually led by Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving—as they battle the villainous General Morden and his Rebel Army.
Morden is a “not-so-subtle” parody of historical dictators, and his goal is a global coup d’état. However, as the series progresses, the “plot” goes completely off the rails. You’ll find yourself fighting mummies in ancient tombs, battling an alien invasion from Mars, and eventually teaming up with your enemies to stop intergalactic threats. It’s a series that starts as a gritty (but cartoonish) war game and ends as a sci-fi epic.

From the first shot fired against General Morden to the multi-branching alien madness of Metal Slug 3 and the debut of Metal Slug 6, it’s all here. Master a massive arsenal of Heavy Machine Guns, Rocket Launchers, and Flame Shots. Whether you’re turning into a zombie, getting ‘fat’ on bonus food, or riding a camel with a vulcan cannon, the action never stops.
Mission Start! Are you ready for the ultimate slugfest?“

Short Review: Arcade in Your Pocket
The Good
-
Incredible Art: The hand-drawn pixel art is legendary. The animations are fluid, expressive, and full of humorous “little details” (like soldiers sunbathing before they see you).
-
Save Anywhere: Unlike the arcades, the PSP version allows you to save your progress mid-mission.
-
Metal Slug 6: Including the sixth game was a major selling point, as it was quite hard to find at the time and introduced unique character abilities (like Ralf and Clark from King of Fighters).
The Bad
-
Loading Times: There are brief loading pauses between sections of a level that weren’t in the original arcade versions.
-
Screen Ratio: Since the originals were 4:3, playing in 16:9 widescreen stretches the pixels. Most veterans recommend playing in “Original” or “4:3” mode for the best look.
