Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition (2005) is widely considered one of the most impressive technical feats on the PSP. It is a near-perfect port of the console version, bringing the same open-world cities, deep customization, and blistering sense of speed to a handheld.

Game Premise

You are a newcomer in the underground street racing scene, starting with a humble ride and a little cash. By winning races across three massive American cities—San Diego, Atlanta, and Detroit—you earn the money and reputation needed to “pimp your ride” and challenge the elite racing clubs.

The game is a collaboration with DUB Magazine, the authority on automotive lifestyle. This partnership brought licensed vehicles and authentic aftermarket parts into the series for the first time, emphasizing “style” just as much as “speed.”

Back Cover Description

THE FASTEST RACING EVER ON THE PSP.

“The series that took racing from closed tracks to urban streets is back to raise the stakes. Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition delivers the fastest, most open-ended racing experience ever seen on a handheld.

Blaze through traffic at over 200 MPH in three massive living cities. For the first time in the series, drive authentic licensed vehicles—from SUVs and luxury sedans to import tuners and choppers. Trick out your ride with the latest rims, trims, and performance upgrades from the pages of DUB Magazine. With a massive 20-hour career mode, 6-player wireless multiplayer, and a killer 98-track licensed soundtrack, the streets are yours.

Customize. Race. Dominate.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Open World: Unlike many other PSP racers of the time, the cities are fully open. You can find shortcuts, jump off roofs, and explore every alleyway to get an edge in races.

  • Deep Customization: You can modify everything from engine performance to visual flair like neon lights, tinted windows, and spinners. It remains one of the most comprehensive tuning systems on the system.

  • Special Abilities: Different vehicle classes have unique “power-ups”:

    • Zone: Slows down time for precise handling (Tuners/Exotics).

    • Agro: Allows you to plow through traffic without losing speed (SUVs/Trucks).

    • Roar: Sends out a shockwave that moves traffic out of your way (Muscle Cars/Choppers).

  • The Soundtrack: A massive 98-song library spanning Hip-Hop, Rock, and Electronic music, perfectly capturing the mid-2000s “DUB” aesthetic.

Short Review: High-Speed Grandeur

The Good

  • No Compromises: It is almost the exact same game as the PS2 version. Seeing that level of detail and a fully living city on a 2005 handheld was mind-blowing.

  • Sense of Speed: The “motion blur” and lighting effects make 200 MPH feel genuinely dangerous and exciting.

  • Endless Replayability: Between the three cities and over 60 unlockable vehicles, it can easily take 40+ hours to 100% the game.

The Bad

  • Loading Times: This is the game’s biggest flaw. Moving between the garage and the city can take a significant amount of time, which was a common issue with early UMD titles.

  • Framerate: In high-intensity races with lots of traffic and police, the frame rate can occasionally dip, though it rarely ruins the experience.
