Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon X (2010) is a massive two-in-one celebration of the Tales series’ origins. It is technically a remake of the first-ever Tales sequel (Narikiri Dungeon on the Game Boy Color), but it famously includes a second, separate game on the same UMD: Tales of Phantasia X (Cross Edition), which is widely considered the definitive version of the original 1995 classic.
Game 1: Narikiri Dungeon X (The Remake)
This is a “Dungeon Crawler” RPG that takes place 205 years after the events of Tales of Phantasia.
-
The Twins: You play as Dio and Mel, twins who have the power of “Narikiri”—the ability to transform and gain powers based on the clothes they wear.
-
The Costume System: There are approximately 80 costumes to unlock. Dio specializes in physical roles (Samurai, Knight, Shinobi), while Mel focuses on magic and support (Witch, Nurse, Scholar).
-
The Story: Guided by a fairy named Etos, the twins travel through time to the era of the original Phantasia heroes to correct a mysterious distortion in history.
Game 2: Tales of Phantasia X (Cross Edition)
This is the fourth and final remake of the original Tales of Phantasia. It features:
-
The 10th Hero: A brand-new playable character named Rondoline E. Effenberg, a time-traveler who fits seamlessly into the classic story.
-
Modernized Combat: It uses the XAR-LMBS (Cross Arts Aerial Linear Motion Battle System), which is faster and allows for aerial combos, making it feel much more like Tales of Destiny DC or Tales of Vesperia.
-
Full Voice Acting: Every story beat and skit is fully voiced by the original legendary cast.
The 2026 English Translation Update
For over a decade, this game was a “holy grail” for importers. As of January 31, 2026, the fan-translation group Life Bottle Productions released a major milestone:
-
Phantasia X (Full Translation): The Tales of Phantasia portion of the UMD is now 100% playable in English, including all story, skits, and items.
-
Optional 60 FPS: The patch includes a code to run the battle system at a silky-smooth 60 frames per second (the original was 30).
-
Narikiri Dungeon X (Status): While the team is currently working on the Narikiri sequel portion, it remains primarily in Japanese/Menu-translated status for now.
Secrets & Unlockables
-
The EX Dungeon: After beating the game and starting a New Game+, you can access a massive bonus dungeon in the southeast of the world map. It features the hardest bosses in the game and the final two “God-Tier” costumes for the twins.
-
The Debug Room: There is a hidden developer room accessible via a specific chest in Etos’ House, but a true “Debug Room” (allowing you to warp and test items) exists behind CWCheat codes:
-
NDX Debug Map: 0xE0044300 0x0023B7A0 0x202272A0 0x00000005
-
-
Cameo Costumes: You can unlock costumes that let Dio and Mel transform into other Tales protagonists like Lloyd Irving (Symphonia) or Luke fon Fabre (Abyss).
Short Review: The Ultimate Legacy Pack
The Good
-
Incredible Value: You are getting two full 40+ hour RPGs in one package.
-
The Definitive Version: Phantasia X fixes almost every complaint about previous versions, specifically making the combat feel modern and fluid.
-
Nostalgia: Seeing the original cast interact with the new characters (Rondoline and the twins) is peak fanservice.
The Bad
-
Narikiri Repetition: The Narikiri Dungeon side involves a lot of backtracking and grinding through the same environments.
-
Language Split: Because the current English patch only covers the Phantasia side, players will still need a guide for the Narikiri sequel’s story.
