Obscure: The Aftermath (2009)—known as Obscure II in Europe—is a rare breed of survival horror on the PSP. While most horror games on the system were ports of PlayStation classics or Silent Hill spin-offs, Obscure brought a “teen slasher” movie vibe, complete with co-op gameplay and a licensed alternative rock soundtrack.

The Plot: Tea and Terror

Set two years after the “Leafmore High” incident of the first game, the survivors have moved on to Fallcreek University.

The Catalyst: A mysterious black flower has spread across campus. Students have started grinding it up to make a hallucinogenic “tea.”
The Outbreak: During a frat party, the flowers bloom, releasing spores that mutate the students into grotesque, Lovecraftian meat-monsters.
The Cast: You control a revolving door of six students (including survivors Stan and Shannon). The story is intentionally “cheesy,” mimicking 90s horror films like The Faculty.

PSP Version: The Portable Perks

While it is a port of the console version, the PSP edition received some specific “quality of life” tweaks:

Improved Save System: In the PS2 original, save points disappeared after one use. On the PSP, you can use save points as many times as you want, making the handheld experience much less frustrating.
Ad-Hoc Co-op: Unlike the console versions which used a shared screen, the PSP version gives each player their own screen. You can wander further apart from your partner, though leaving an entire area will still “drag” the other player with you.
Visual Polish: Because the screen is smaller, the character models and textures actually look sharper and more detailed than they did on the PS2.

Character Skills: The “Buddy System”

The core of Obscure is that you are almost never alone. Each character has a specific role required to solve puzzles:

Stan: The “Master of Unlocking” (lockpicking minigame).
Shannon: Can absorb “Black Aura” (mystical clouds) and provide lore hints.
Kenny / Sven: The “Heavy Lifters” who can push large crates and furniture.
Mei: The hacker who can crack security keypads via a word-scramble minigame.
Corey: The acrobat who can climb ledges and reach high places.
Amy: Can spot hidden clues and solve environmental puzzles.

Short Review: A B-Movie You Can Play

The Good

Atmospheric Audio: Features an incredible score by the Paris Opera Children’s Choir and the Boston String Quartet. The sound design—full of wet squelches and distant screams—is genuinely unsettling.
Drop-in Co-op: One of the few survival horror games on PSP that you can play entirely with a friend. It makes the combat much more manageable.
“Cheesy” Charm: If you enjoy “so bad it’s good” dialogue and over-the-top character deaths, the story is a total blast.

The Bad

Clunky Controls: Without a second analog stick, camera control is mapped to the D-Pad. This can be a nightmare during frantic boss fights.
AI Stupidity: If you play solo, your AI partner has a habit of wasting ammo or running directly into a monster’s claws, forcing you to constantly babysit them.
Load Times: Being a late UMD release, the game suffers from frequent mid-level loading pauses that can kill the tension.
