PC Engine Best Collection: Makyou Collection (2008) is a rare and highly sought-after compilation for the PSP. Part of Hudson Soft’s effort to preserve PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) classics, this specific volume focuses on the “Makyou” (Demon World/Magical World) series—most notably the legendary Far East of Eden franchise and the cult-classic Gulliver Boy.

The Plot / Premise: Mythology & Steampunk

This collection includes two massive, cinematic RPGs that were technical marvels on the PC Engine CD-ROM² system:

  1. Tengai Makyou: Ziria (Far East of Eden): Set in “Jipang” (a fantasy version of feudal Japan), it follows the Fire Clan’s struggle against a demonic cult. It was the first RPG ever released on CD-ROM.

  2. Kuusou Kagaku Sekai Gulliver Boy: Based on the anime of the same name, it follows Gulliver and his friends in a “Magic-meets-Science” (Steampunk) world as they fight the Blue Dragon Knights.

The Big Change: Portable Cinema

Since the original games were CD-based, they featured full voice acting and animated cutscenes, which was revolutionary in the late 80s/early 90s. The PSP version handles this transition perfectly:

  • CD Audio & Voice: Unlike the “Soldier Collection,” which used chiptunes, this collection features high-quality Redbook Audio and original Japanese voice acting.

  • Widescreen Adjustments: You can toggle between the original 4:3 aspect ratio (with borders) or a zoomed/stretched 16:9 mode.

  • Save Anywhere: A vital “Quality of Life” feature added for the PSP, allowing you to save your progress in the middle of a dungeon.

Key Features

  • Tengai Makyou: Ziria: Features a classic turn-based combat system with a heavy emphasis on Japanese folklore, toad-summoning magic, and quirky humor.

  • Gulliver Boy: Uses a more “Action-RPG” style of presentation with vibrant, anime-style visuals and a focus on “Blue Eagle” technology and mystical stones.

  • Digital Gallery: The UMD includes a “Museum” mode featuring scans of the original PC Engine box art, manuals, and a sound test to listen to the classic soundtracks.

  • Fast Loading: Because the data is read from the UMD (or Memory Stick) rather than an old CD drive, the loading times for transitions and battles are significantly faster than the original hardware.

Short Review: A Time Capsule of 16-bit RPGs

The Good

  • Pure Nostalgia: For fans of 90s anime and classic JRPGs, the art style by Oji Hiroi (of Sakura Wars fame) is stunning and full of character.

  • Excellent Value: These were massive games on the PC Engine; having both on one handheld disc is a completionist’s dream.

  • Historical Importance: This is the easiest way to play the original version of Ziria, which paved the way for modern cinematic RPGs like Final Fantasy VII.

The Bad

  • The Language Barrier: These are 40-hour RPGs with complex dialogue, puns, and menu systems. Without knowing Japanese, you will likely get stuck very early on.

  • Dated Mechanics: Ziria in particular has a very high random encounter rate and requires a significant amount of “grinding” for experience points.

  • Rarity: Like the rest of the PC Engine Best Collection, this UMD was a limited release and is now quite expensive to find in the second-hand market.
