Persona 2: Innocent Sin (2011) is the enhanced remake of the 1999 PlayStation classic. For over a decade, this was the “missing link” for Western fans, as the original PS1 version was never localized due to its controversial content (including an appearance by a fictionalized Adolf Hitler). The PSP version finally brought this dark, urban legend-driven story to the rest of the world.

Game Story & Premise

The story takes place in Sumaru City, where a terrifying phenomenon has taken hold: Rumors are becoming reality. If enough people believe a lie, it physically manifests in the real world.

The Plot: You play as Tatsuya Suou, a stoic student at Seven Sisters High. After a “Persona-summoning” ritual goes wrong, Tatsuya and his friends encounter the Joker—a mysterious figure who grants wishes to those who call him, but steals the “ideal energy” (soul) of those who fail. As the city descends into madness, the group discovers that a secret organization called the Masked Circle is manipulating rumors to bring about a world-ending prophecy.

The story is famously surreal, involving everything from cursed school emblems to the return of the “Last Battalion” led by a “Fuhrer” wielding the Spear of Destiny.

Back Cover Description

THE LOST CHAPTER OF THE PERSONA SAGA IS FINALLY FOUND.

“Rumor becomes reality… and reality becomes a nightmare. For the first time in the West, experience the complete Persona 2: Innocent Sin. In Sumaru City, idle gossip has the power to reshape the world. When a mysterious figure known as the Joker begins twisting these rumors for a dark purpose, Tatsuya Suou and his friends must awaken their inner selves—their Personas—to face the demons within and without.

This definitive version features a sleek, remastered interface, a choice between the original and a brand-new remixed soundtrack, and new story quests in the Climax Theater. Master the art of Demon Negotiation to gain Tarot Cards and summon powerful new Personas. Spread your own rumors to change the city’s fate.

The truth is a rumor. The end is near.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • The Rumor System: The core gimmick of the game. You collect rumors from NPCs and pay the Kuzunoha Detective Agency to spread them. This can change the inventory of shops, create new dungeons, or even change the stats of bosses.

  • Fusion Spells: Unlike later Persona games, you can combine specific spells from multiple party members to trigger massive, cinematic team attacks. Finding the right combinations is key to surviving boss fights.

  • Demon Negotiation: Instead of just fighting, you can talk to every demon. Depending on who you choose to speak (Tatsuya can do impressions, Lisa can dance, etc.), you can make demons happy, eager, or angry to earn Tarot Cards used to summon new Personas.

  • Customization: All party members can swap Personas (unlike Persona 3-5 where only the protagonist can). This allows for deep strategic builds.

Short Review: A Cult Classic Refined

The Good

  • The Story: It is widely considered to have one of the best and most mature narratives in the entire Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

  • QoL Improvements: The PSP version features a much faster battle system, a vastly improved UI, and a “Data Install” feature to reduce loading times.

  • Soundtrack: The ability to swap between the classic PS1 score and the new, high-fidelity PSP arrangements is a treat for fans.

The Bad

  • Difficulty: The PSP version is significantly easier than the PS1 original, which some veteran fans found disappointing.

  • High Encounter Rate: Like many 90s RPGs, you will be pulled into random battles every few steps, which can make navigating the “labyrinthine” dungeons feel tedious.

  • Dated Graphics: While the character portraits are beautiful, the world is made of blocky, low-resolution 3D environments that haven’t aged as well as the 2D sprites.
