LocoRoco (2006) is one of the most iconic and “pure” titles in the PSP library. Developed by SCE Japan Studio, it was created with the specific goal of being unlike anything else on the market—a bright, musical, and joy-filled experience that turned the console into a “smile machine.”

The Plot: Planet Tilt

You don’t play as the characters; you play as the Planet itself.

  • The Conflict: The peaceful LocoRoco and their friends, the Mui Mui, are invaded by the Moja Troop, space-borne monsters that eat LocoRoco.

  • The Hero: Since the LocoRoco don’t know how to fight, the player must tilt and shake the world to roll them to safety, helping them grow and multiply to restore peace to the environment.

Key Features: Tilting & Singing

  • Unique Controls: The game famously uses only three main buttons.

    • L & R Triggers: Tilt the world left or right.

    • Both Triggers: Make the LocoRoco hop.

    • Circle Button: “Split” a large LocoRoco into many small ones to fit through tight gaps, or hold it to “Merge” them back together.

  • Interactive Soundtrack: The LocoRoco sing constantly. As you collect more berries and grow your “blob,” more voices join the choir. Each of the six colors of LocoRoco has its own singing style and personality.

  • The Loco House: A customizable playground where you can use “Pickories” (currency) and items found in levels to build an obstacle course for your LocoRoco to play in.

Secrets & Cheat Codes

The game is packed with hidden Mui Mui and secret paths. To unlock everything instantly, you can use specialized codes on the World Map screen.

Short Review: Video Game Prozac

The Good

  • Infectious Joy: It is almost impossible to play LocoRoco without smiling. The art style is clean and timeless, and the music is legendary.

  • Perfect Portability: Levels are short, and the three-button control scheme is perfect for handheld play without needing an analog stick.

  • Hidden Depth: While finishing a level is easy, finding all 20 berries and the hidden Mui Mui requires genuine skill and exploration.

The Bad

  • Low Difficulty: Veteran gamers may find the main campaign too easy, as there are very few ways to actually “lose” beyond losing a few blobs to a Moja.

  • Repetition: By the fifth world, the gameplay loop doesn’t change much, which might lead to burnout if played in one long sitting.
