Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (2008) on the PSP is widely considered the best version of the game by many hardcore fans. While the PS3/Xbox 360 versions had superior graphics and physics (DMM/Euphoria), the PSP version—developed by Krome Studios—packed in significantly more content, exclusive modes, and classic Star Wars fan service that the “next-gen” consoles lacked.
⚡Set between Episode III and Episode IV, you play as Starkiller (Galen Marek).
-
The Mission: Darth Vader rescues you as a child and trains you in the ways of the Sith to help him hunt down the remaining Jedi.
-
The Power: Unlike the grounded combat of previous games, The Force Unleashed lets you use the Force at an “insane” level—blasting TIE Fighters out of the sky and disintegrating Stormtroopers.
PSP Exclusive Content (The “Hidden” Gem)
This is where the PSP version outshines the PS3/360 versions:
-
Force Duel Mode: A specialized fighting game mode where you can pick legendary characters (Luke, Vader, Maul, Anakin, etc.) and battle in iconic locations.
-
Order 66 Mode: A “Horde” or “Survival” mode where you fight endless waves of enemies to see how long you can survive.
-
Historic Missions: You can play through “reimagined” classic movie moments, such as the duel between Luke and Vader on Bespin or Anakin vs. Obi-Wan on Mustafar.
-
Force Trials: A series of puzzle and combat challenges designed to test your mastery of specific Force powers.
Secrets, Unlockables, and Cheats
The PSP version is famous for its massive list of secret characters and “Costume” swaps.
The Cheat Terminal
In the Extras menu, you can enter codes to unlock some of the coolest content immediately:
-
MANDALORE: Unlock Boba Fett. -
EXORDIUM: Unlock the Apprentice’s Battle Armor. -
ASTRAL: Infinite Force Power. -
SITHLORD: Maximum Dark Side Powers. -
WOOKIEE: Unlock Chewbacca.
Hidden Lightsaber Crystals
Each level contains hidden Holocrons. In the PSP version, these are crucial because they unlock different saber colors and “Power Crystals” (like the Compressed Yellow Crystal) which add effects like lightning damage or health drain to your strikes.
Gameplay Mechanics
-
Force Combos: You can combine Saber strikes with Force Push or Lightning to create devastating finishers (like the Saber Sling).
-
QTE Boss Fights: The game uses “God of War” style Cinematic Quick-Time Events for finishing off massive bosses like Rancors or Jedi Masters.
-
Targeting: Because the PSP lacks a second stick, the game uses a “Snap-to” targeting system that works surprisingly well for the handheld.
Short Review: The Definitive Content Version
The Good
-
The Roster: Being able to play as Darth Maul or Mace Windu in the Duel Mode adds months of replayability.
-
Performance: It runs at a very smooth framerate, and the loading times are manageable compared to other big PSP titles.
-
The Story: Starkiller’s journey is genuinely moving and fits perfectly into the Legends canon.
The Bad
-
Physics: You lose the “Digital Molecular Matter” (shattering glass/bending metal) found in the PS3 version.
-
Environments: Some of the textures can look a bit muddy and brown, especially in the Felucia levels.
-
Camera: Occasionally, the camera gets stuck behind a wall during intense fights, requiring a manual reset with the L Trigger.
