Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (2009) is the final entry in the main series for the PSP, developed by High Voltage Software (the same team behind Iron Man 2 PSP). It attempts to return to the series’ roots of platforming and exploration while introducing a heavy focus on aerial dogfighting.

Game Story & Premise

Taking place some time after the events of Jak 3, the world is running out of Eco. Jak, Daxter, and Keira travel to the “Brink” (the edge of the world) to find a new source of energy.

Back Cover Description:

“The adventure continues! The world’s supply of Eco is dwindling, and the planet is slowly dying. To save their home, Jak and Daxter must journey to the edge of the world in search of an ancient Precursor machine that could reverse the planet’s decline. But the Brink is a dangerous place, filled with Sky Pirates and a mysterious new threat known as Dark Eco crystals. Master new Eco powers, pilot five different customizable aircraft, and fight your way through an epic story that takes the legendary duo to new heights. The world is on the edge—will you fall, or will you fly?”

The Narrative Twist

Because the Brink is unstable, Jak cannot transform into Light or Dark Jak. Instead, he uses Eco Skills—specialized abilities like “Eco Shield,” “Eco Teleport,” and “Rocket Jump”—that are powered by the Eco crystals he finds throughout the journey.

Secret Codes & Unlocks

The PSP version allows you to unlock various “cheats” by collecting Precursor Orbs. Once you have enough, go to the Secrets menu.

Effect Requirement
Big Head Mode (Jak) 5 Precursor Orbs
Big Head Mode (Daxter) 10 Precursor Orbs
Monster Muffler (Louder engines) 20 Precursor Orbs
Infinite Gun Ammo 40 Precursor Orbs
Infinite Plane Boost 60 Precursor Orbs
Invincibility 100 Precursor Orbs

Special Unlock: Dark Daxter

In certain sections of the game, Daxter is exposed to a concentrated blast of Dark Eco, transforming him into Dark Daxter. This is a mini-game mode where Daxter becomes a hulking beast that can smash through obstacles and spin like a tornado to defeat large groups of enemies.

Key Gameplay Features

  • The Gunstaff: Instead of carrying multiple guns, Jak uses a single “Gunstaff” that can transform into different weapons: the Scatter Gun (Red), Blaster (Yellow), Vulcan Shroud (Blue), and Lobber (Dark).

  • Customizable Aircraft: You spend a significant portion of the game in the air. You can customize the Hellcat (and four other ships) with different engines, wings, and weapon systems using “Scrap” collected from fallen enemies.

  • Eco Skills Tree: You can upgrade Jak’s physical abilities by talking to Keira. This adds a light RPG element to the platforming, allowing you to choose whether to focus on defense or high-mobility attacks.

Short Review: A Fragmented Legacy

The Good

  • Aerial Combat: The dogfighting is surprisingly polished and feels great on the PSP. Customizing your ship provides a satisfying sense of progression.

  • Music: The orchestral score captures that classic Jak adventurous feeling perfectly.

  • Scale: The environments feel massive, especially when transitioning from the ground to the sky.

The Bad

  • No “Jak” Voice: While Daxter is voiced by Max Casella, Jak’s original voice actor (Josh Keaton) replaced Mike Erwin, which can be jarring for long-time fans.

  • Animation Quality: Compared to the Daxter standalone game, the character animations here feel a bit stiff and lack the “bouncy” quality of the Naughty Dog originals.

  • Dark Daxter Sections: These sequences are often criticized for being repetitive and breaking the flow of the traditional platforming.
