Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of Ancient Arts (2008) is a revival of the classic TurboGrafx-16 franchise. While it shares a name with a Nintendo DS version released around the same time, the PSP version is a completely different game with its own story, mechanics, and significantly deeper RPG systems.
The Premise: The Prequel to Legend
While the DS version takes place in the far future, the PSP version focuses on the “Golden Age” and the events leading up to the original series.
-
The Story: You play as a customizable adventurer in a world where ancient seals on dungeons are weakening. You are tasked by a sorcerer to help reseal these “Monster Generators” before a Great Evil is unleashed.
-
The Races: You choose from three distinct races: the human-like Izark, the elf-like Ist, and the reptilian Olff. Your choice of race determines your starting location and how your attributes (HP/AP) grow.
Key Features: Deep Customization
The PSP version is much more complex than its DS counterpart, leaning into heavy “job” and “art” systems:
-
Job System: You start with 6 base classes (Fighter, Hunter, Monk, Thief, Shaman, Bishop). By mastering combinations of these, you can unlock 6 Advanced Classes (like the Samurai or Boxer). You can swap classes between missions to experiment with different playstyles.
-
Big Bang Arts: Exclusive to the PSP version, these are massive team-based attacks. In multiplayer, three players can sync their timing to unleash a devastating screen-clearing move.
-
“The Grid” & Equipment: There are over 700 items and pieces of equipment. The game features a deep crafting and alchemy system where you use materials found in dungeons to upgrade weapons or add elemental properties.
-
AI Party: If playing solo, you aren’t alone. You can recruit up to three NPC allies and customize their “Gambit-style” behavior—deciding how often they heal, use magic, or focus on monster spawners.
Gameplay: The Dungeon Loop
-
The Hub: You operate out of a central town, taking quests from the Adventurer’s Guild.
-
Scaling Dungeons: Dungeons aren’t just one-and-done; you acquire “Plates” for each area. By inserting jewels into these plates, you can “level up” a dungeon to make it harder but yield better loot.
-
Monster Generators: True to the series’ Gauntlet roots, dungeons are filled with stone portals that infinitely spawn enemies until destroyed.
Short Review: A Grinder’s Delight
The Good
-
Replayability: The combination of 3 races, 12 classes, and 150+ “Combat Arts” provides an incredible amount of theory-crafting and build variety.
-
Co-op Fun: Playing with two friends via Ad-Hoc is the intended experience and makes the tactical “Big Bang” timing much more satisfying.
-
Solid Visuals: For a 2008 PSP game, the character models and elemental effects are sharp and look significantly better than the DS version.
The Bad
-
Repetitive Design: The “core loop” is very traditional. You will spend hours destroying the same monster generators in similar-looking corridors.
-
Inaccessible Menus: The UI is notoriously clunky. Managing 700+ items and upgrading gear through alchemy involves navigating several layers of slow, unintuitive menus.
-
Weak Story: Despite the lore connection to the PC Engine games, the plot is generic and often told through dry text boxes.
