Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Tag Force 5 (2010) is widely considered one of the most polished and content-complete entries in the long-running Tag Force series. Arriving during the peak of the Synchro Summon era, it perfectly captures the high-speed, high-stakes energy of the 5D’s anime’s “WRGP” (World Riding Duel Grand Prix) arc.

The Plot / Premise: The WRGP Awakening

The game is set in Neo Domino City during the events of the third and fourth seasons of the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s anime.

  • The Protagonist: You play as a silent, red-hatted duelist who has just moved to the city. Your goal is to find a partner among the legendary Signers (or even the villains) to compete in the upcoming tag-team tournaments.

  • The Conflict: While the WRGP is the main event, a mysterious group known as the Three Emperors of Iliaster (Lucciano, Placido, and Jose) are manipulating the city’s energy to rewrite history.

  • The Social Loop: You spend your days exploring the city, buying sandwiches to give as gifts to increase “Heart Levels” with NPCs, and dueling anyone you meet to earn DP (Duel Points) for new packs.

The Big Change: Synchro Supremacy

By the time Tag Force 5 was released, the Synchro Summon mechanic was fully matured. This version introduced some of the most powerful and iconic cards in the game’s history:

  • The Shooting Star: For the first time, players could reliably summon Shooting Star Dragon and Red Nova Dragon, utilizing the “Accal Synchro” and “Double Tuning” mechanics.

  • Refined Partner AI: Previous games were criticized for “stupid” AI partners who would ruin your combos. TF5 improved this significantly, allowing you to give specific commands and influence how your partner builds their deck.

  • Turbo Duels: While the game focuses on standard Tag Duels, it includes “Turbo Duel” mechanics using Speed Spells, mirroring the motorcycle-based dueling from the show.

Key Features

  • Massive Roster: Features over 60 characters to interact with, including “Tier 1” Signers like Yusei and Akiza, and “Tier 2” generic duelists with unique decks.

  • Anime Logic: Unlike the official TCG/OCG, the game includes “Anime-only” cards (like the Meklord Emperors) that were adapted with balanced effects for the digital game.

  • UMD Recognition: Inserting previous Tag Force discs into the PSP unlocks rare cards and bonus DP, such as the Egyptian God Cards.

  • Animations: Features beautiful 3D summoning animations for “Ace Monsters” like Stardust Dragon and Black Rose Dragon.

Short Review: The Definitive 5D’s Experience

The Good

  • The “Card Pool” Sweet Spot: Many veteran players believe this era of Yu-Gi-Oh! (Pre-Xyz/Pendulum) was the most balanced and strategic.

  • Deep Social System: Increasing your bond with a character unlocks their personal storyline, which often provides “What If” scenarios different from the anime.

  • Speedy Gameplay: The PSP handles the card processing much faster than earlier entries, meaning less waiting during the AI’s “thinking” phase.

The Bad

  • The Sandwich Grind: To unlock the best story paths, you have to buy a lot of sandwiches to bribe your partners. It can get repetitive.

  • The “Banlist” Barrier: Some of the late-game AI decks use incredibly broken “Forbidden” cards, which can make certain matches feel unfair unless you also cheat the banlist.

  • Missing Features: Unlike the Japanese version, the North American and European releases removed the Voice Acting due to UMD space constraints, making the story segments feel a bit quiet.
