X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse (2005) is often cited as one of the best “full console experiences” on the PSP. While many handheld ports of the era were stripped down, the PSP version—developed by Vicarious Visions—not only included the entire console campaign but added exclusive characters and missions that made it arguably the definitive edition of the game.

Game Story & Premise

The sequel unites two former enemies—the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants—to face a threat greater than their own rivalry.

Back Cover Description:

“The age of Apocalypse is here! In a world-shattering alliance, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants join forces to battle the ultimate evil: Apocalypse. This ancient mutant has kidnapped Professor X and Polaris, and his plan for global domination will spare no one.Choose from a massive roster of legendary mutants, each with devastating new powers and customization options. For the first time on a handheld, experience the full console adventure with four-player wireless co-op. Form your strike team, master your mutant abilities, and destroy the Horsemen of Apocalypse. The survival of Earth depends on the ultimate alliance.”

  • Iron Man: Find all 4 “Tony Stark Armor” pieces in Acts 1 through 4.

  • Professor X: Complete all Danger Room missions.

PSP Exclusive Features

The PSP version stands out because it actually contains more content than the PS2 or Xbox versions:

  • 4 Exclusive Playable Characters: Cable, Cannonball, X-Man, and Dark Phoenix are only playable on the PSP.

  • 9 Exclusive Comic Missions: These are extra levels unlocked by collecting comic book covers throughout the game.

  • Wireless Multiplayer: Supports 4-player co-op via Ad-Hoc (local wireless), maintaining the core team-based gameplay the series is known for.

Gameplay Mechanics

  • The Hub System: Between missions, you visit home bases (like the X-Mansion or Avalon) to talk to NPCs, take trivia quizzes for XP, and manage your inventory.

  • Team Bonuses: Selecting specific combinations of characters grants passive buffs (e.g., the “Femme Fatale” team of Storm, Scarlet Witch, Rogue, and Jean Grey gives a +5% damage-to-health gain).

  • Customization: You can manually assign stat points (Body, Focus, Strike, Speed) or let the AI handle it, allowing you to build characters like “Tank Wolverine” or “Caster Magneto.”

Short Review: The Ultimate Handheld Alliance

The Good

  • Massive Roster: With the console cast plus the PSP exclusives, you have over 20 mutants to choose from.

  • Visuals: The cel-shaded art style scales perfectly to the PSP screen, making it one of the most vibrant games on the system.

  • Full Experience: No levels or cutscenes were cut for the handheld version; it is the complete game in your pocket.

The Bad

  • Technical Hiccups: Occasionally, the game can stutter during intense four-player battles with lots of particle effects.

  • Loading Times: Being a massive game on a UMD, the initial load times can be a bit long.
