Dead or Alive: Paradise (2010) is a spin-off of the famous fighting game series, specifically acting as a portable version of the DOA Xtreme beach volleyball games. Rather than focusing on high-stakes martial arts, this title is a “vacation simulator” designed for the PSP, focusing on mini-games, gift-giving, and relaxation.
Game Story & Premise
The “story” is essentially an invitation to a two-week tropical getaway hosted by the billionaire Zack on his private island.
Back Cover Description:
“Take the ultimate vacation on the go! The girls of Dead or Alive are taking a break from the tournament and heading to New Venus Island. Spend two weeks in paradise as you bond with 10 beautiful characters. From beach volleyball to hopping across pool floats, enjoy a variety of tropical activities. Earn ‘Zack Dollars’ to shop for over 300 different swimsuits, accessories, and gifts. Whether you’re relaxing on the beach or testing your luck at the Casino, every day in Paradise is yours to enjoy. It’s the perfect getaway in the palm of your hand!”
The 10th Girl: Rio Rollins
While the game features the main DOA cast (Kasumi, Ayane, Hitomi, etc.), it also introduces a special guest character: Rio Rollins. She originated from a popular series of Japanese pachinko machines (Rio Series) and serves as the dealer in the Casino when she isn’t a playable vacationer.
Secrets & Unlocks
Progress is measured in days. Each “vacation” lasts 14 days, and you must replay the game multiple times to unlock everything.
The Private School Swimsuit
To unlock the “Secret” school swimsuit for any girl, you must reach an S-Rank for your 14-day vacation with that specific character. This requires keeping her “Satisfaction” meter at maximum by winning mini-games and giving her liked gifts.
Zack’s Secret Gifts
If you manage to complete a vacation with a very high satisfaction rating, Zack may send you a “Secret” swimsuit in the mail on the final night. These are usually the most expensive and rare items in the game.
Cheat Code (Japanese Version Only)
In the Japanese release (DOA Paradise), entering a specific sequence at the title screen could unlock all Gravure clips, but this was removed for the Western release to encourage replayability.
Key Gameplay Features
-
Beach Volleyball: A simplified version of the console game’s mechanics. You pick a partner and compete to earn the most Zack Dollars.
-
The Casino: Available only at night. You can play Blackjack, Poker, and Slots. This is often the fastest way to earn money for the extremely expensive “Godly” swimsuits.
-
Pictorial Mode: As you bond with the girls, you unlock the ability to take photos of them in different locations around the island. These photos can be saved to your PSP’s Memory Stick as wallpapers.
-
Radio Station: You can customize the game’s soundtrack by importing your own MP3 files from your Memory Stick into the game’s “User Radio.”
Short Review: Tropical Relaxation
The Good
-
Visuals: For a PSP title, the character models are highly detailed and feature smooth animations, staying true to the Team Ninja aesthetic.
-
Portability: The game is structured in “Mornings, Afternoons, and Evenings,” making it easy to play through a single “day” in about 5–10 minutes.
-
Soundtrack: It features a very chill, bossa nova and pop-inspired OST that fits the vacation theme perfectly.
The Bad
-
Repetition: The mini-games (Pool Hopping and Butt Battles) are very simple and can become tedious after several playthroughs.
-
The Grind: Some items cost millions of Zack Dollars, forcing players to spend a lot of time in the Casino to unlock the full collection.
