Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology (2007) is a unique crossover Action-RPG that acts as a “Greatest Hits” for the Tales series. It was the first time the Tales of the World spin-off series left Japan, offering a massive dungeon-crawler experience where you create your own protagonist to fight alongside legends from Tales of Symphonia, Abyss, Phantasia, and more.

Game Story & Premise

You play as a Descender, a champion created by the world’s “World Tree” to save the planet Terresia from an entity known as the Devourer.

Back Cover Description:

“The world of Terresia is fading. As the Devourer consumes the land’s mana, the World Tree has summoned you—the Descender—as its final hope. But you won’t fight alone.Join forces with over 19 legendary heroes from the Tales series to form ‘Ad Libitum,’ a guild dedicated to saving the world. Create your own hero from scratch, master multiple job classes, and craft thousands of items. In a world of infinite quests and real-time battles, your legend begins today!”

Character Creation & Classes

This was the first Tales game to feature a fully customizable protagonist. You choose your gender, hair, voice, and starting class.

The Job System

You can switch classes at the guild, but your level resets to 1 for each new class (though your old level is saved).

Starting Classes Elite / Advanced Classes (Unlockable)
Warrior Magic Knight (Master Warrior + Mage/Priest)
Thief Ninja (Master Fighter + Thief + Hunter)
Mage Bishop (Master Mage + Priest)
Priest Paladin (Master Warrior + Priest)

Secrets & Unlockables

Progress in Radiant Mythology is tied to “Fame” and “Titles.” Titles aren’t just for show; they grant permanent stat boosts.

Key Title Unlocks

  • World Savior: Increases gained EXP. (Unlock: Beat the final boss, Widdershin).

  • Monster Pundit: Lowers enemy encounter rate. (Unlock: Scan every enemy in the game).

  • Battle Master: Raises TP during normal movement. (Unlock: Clear all Boss Character Challenge Quests).

  • Worthless Bum: A joke title. (Unlock: Accept “The Earthquake’s Epicenter” mission, then immediately quit and talk to Garr).

EX Dungeons & Radiant Quests

  • Radiant Gear: Once you reach a high level in a specific class, you can trigger “Radiant Quests” to fight a shadow version of yourself. Winning grants the Radiant Set, the most powerful gear for that class.

  • Hard & Very Hard Mode: Beat the game once to unlock these higher difficulties.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • Flex Range Linear Motion Battle System: A real-time combat system that allows you to move freely in 3D space. You control your hero while the AI handles your Tales companions.

  • The “Mormo” System: Since your character is a silent protagonist, your floating cat-like companion, Mormo, does most of the talking for you.

  • Crafting & Mining: You can spend hours mining ores and gathering herbs to craft over 1,000 different weapons and armor pieces, all of which change your character’s physical appearance.

Short Review: A Fan’s Dream, A Grinder’s Journey

The Good

  • Fan Service: Seeing Lloyd Irving (Symphonia) talk to Luke fon Fabre (Abyss) is a dream come true for series fans.

  • Customization: The ability to see every piece of loot you equip on your 3D model was very impressive for 2007.

  • Combat: It feels exactly like a console Tales game—fast, fluid, and satisfying.

The Bad

  • Repetitive Quests: About 80% of the game consists of “Fetch 5 herbs” or “Kill 10 wolves” missions to build up Fame.

  • Dungeon Design: The dungeons are mostly corridors and can feel a bit “samey” after several hours.

  • Late-Game Difficulty: The final boss is a significant difficulty spike that usually requires heavy level grinding to overcome.
