Snoopy vs. the Red Baron (2006) is a charming and surprisingly robust flight combat game released for the PlayStation Portable. Developed by Smart Bomb Interactive, the game fully expands upon Charles M. Schulz’s classic Peanuts comic strip gag where Snoopy imagines his doghouse is a World War I Sopwith Camel biplane, taking to the skies to fight his arch-nemesis, the Red Baron.

🛩️ Gameplay & Mechanics: Arcade Dogfighting

The game completely embraces accessible, arcade-style flight physics rather than complex simulation, making it easy to pick up but keeping it engaging with deep weapon variety.

  • Responsive Flight Controls: Players pilot Snoopy’s customized biplane across massive, open 3D environments. The analog nub controls basic steering, pitch, and roll, while the PSP’s shoulder buttons execute classic dogfight evasive maneuvers like tight barrel rolls and quick 180-degree loop-de-loops.
  • Whimsical Arsenal: Snoopy starts with a standard dual machine gun (which can overheat), but can collect and upgrade more than 25 wacky, period-appropriate weapons throughout the campaign. These include bottle rocket swarms, potato shotguns, EMP firecrackers, and guided Woodstock missiles.

🗺️ Campaign Structure & Peanuts Cameos

The single-player campaign features 22 missions spread across 6 distinct battlefields, ranging from the green fields of the Western Front to secret underground enemy strongholds.

While you are flying solo, the story heavily integrates the rest of the Peanuts gang. Characters like Linus, Lucy, and Charlie Brown appear in fully voiced radio transmissions to guide your objectives. Missions vary to keep the pace fast: you will find yourself protecting allied convoy blimps, engaging in high-speed canyon races against rival stunt pilots, and taking down massive, heavily armored German superweapons.

⭐ Short Review: A Hidden Gem in the PSP Library

The Good

  • Excellent Visual Style: The game perfectly balances the warm, hand-drawn comic aesthetics of Charles Schulz’s world with highly detailed, vibrant 3D environments that looked spectacular on the original PSP screen.
  • Surprisingly Satisfying Combat: Don’t let the kid-friendly license fool you—the dogfighting mechanics are tight, fluid, and incredibly fun. Locking onto an enemy plane, pulling a barrel roll to dodge a missile, and tearing them down with potato guns is deeply rewarding.

The Bad

  • Short Campaign: Experienced players can comfortably wrap up the primary story mode in roughly 4 to 5 hours, leaving the root beer coin hunt as the main incentive to replay older levels.
  • Repetitive Mission Objectives: While the scenery changes frequently, many secondary objectives default to “destroy X amount of ground turrets” or “protect this slow-moving balloon,” which can drag slightly in the mid-game.
