Sonic Rivals 2 (2007) is a high-speed, head-to-head racing-platformer developed by Backbone Entertainment and Sega exclusively for the PlayStation Portable. Building directly on the foundation of the first game, this sequel fuses classic 2D side-scrolling Sonic the Hedgehog momentum with 3D graphics and a competitive, weapon-based racing structure.

📖 Story & Premise: The Chao Disappearances

The sinister Dr. Eggman has discovered an ancient, destructive entity known as the “Ifrit.” To awaken it, he needs to feed it the life energy of Chao, prompting him to kidnap hundreds of the cute creatures and hide them away in a secret dimension.

To break the seal, he also hires Rouge the Bat to secretly steal the Chaos Emeralds. Hearing rumors of the plot, Sonic and the rest of the cast split up into four unique, competing duos, each racing through the zones to secure the Chao, find the Chaos Emeralds, and stop Eggman’s plans for their own reasons.

👥 Character Duos & Custom Rival Moves

The game expands the roster to 8 playable characters, structurally grouped into narrative pairs. Collecting rings during a race charges up a meter, allowing you to unleash a character-specific Signature Rival Move to sabotage your opponent:

  • Sonic & Tails: Sonic uses Sonic Boom to trigger a massive burst of raw speed, while Tails uses Tail Copter to fly over obstacles and drop hazards.
  • Shadow & Metal Sonic: Shadow utilizes Chaos Control to slow down time for his rival, while Metal Sonic activates Copycat to instantly duplicate the opponent’s signature move.
  • Knuckles & Rouge: Knuckles unleashes Deep Impact to ground-pound and stun his rival, while Rouge uses Charm Ray to confuse the opponent’s screen controls.
  • Silver & Espio: Silver uses Psychokinesis to flip his opponent’s controls upside down, while Espio uses Chroma Camouflage to turn completely invisible and drop proximity bombs.

⚙️ Key Gameplay Modes & Upgrades

  • The Head-to-Head Race Loop: The core game mechanics are all about momentum. You and an AI or human opponent race simultaneously down branching, loop-filled 2D paths. The first person to cross the finish line wins. Along the way, you can pick up traditional racing game power-ups, like fire shields, lightning trackers, and ice blasters to mess with your rival.
  • Overhauled Battle Mode: Addressing complaints from the first game, Rivals 2 features dedicated, non-racing arenas where you fight your rival directly. Modes include Knockout (a classic brawler setup), Ring Battle (collecting the most rings under a time limit), and Capture the Chao (a specialized twist on Capture the Flag).

⭐ Short Review: A Highly Improved, Kinetic Sequel

The Good

  • Fulfills the Premise Better: The addition of the new Battle Modes breaks up the monotony of the standard races beautifully, giving the game a lot more structural variety than the original.
  • Phenomenal Sense of Speed: When you hit a perfect line of boost pads and loops, the game looks and feels blisteringly fast, perfectly capturing the core identity of the Sonic franchise.

The Bad

  • Cheap Rubber-Band AI: The computer opponents frequently cheat using aggressive “rubber-band” physics. Even if you play perfectly, the AI will magically catch up to you out of nowhere, often hitting you with an unavoidable attack right before the finish line.
  • Frustrating Trial-and-Error: The vertical stages are packed with instant-death spikes and bottomless pits. Because you are moving at terminal velocity, it is often impossible to react in time, forcing you to memorize the stage layouts through repeated failures.
