Despicable Me: The Game (2010) is a tie-in to the first movie, letting you step into the scarf and oversized shoes of the supervillain Gru. While many movie games are just generic runners, this one is a surprisingly clever mix of 2.5D platforming and Lemmings-style puzzle solving.

Game Premise

The game follows the plot of the first film: Gru is in a race against his rival, Vector, to steal the moon. To build his massive rocket, Gru must go on a series of heists to collect various components. You play primarily as Gru, but you are constantly backed by your army of Minions, who act as your expendable tools for overcoming environmental hazards.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

The Gadget Arsenal: Gru uses four main guns to interact with the world and his Minions:
- Air Gun: Used for double-jumping or blowing Minions around.
- Freeze Ray: Freezes moving platforms or turns Minions into solid blocks to be used as stepping stones.
- Magnet Gun: Powers up machines or turns Minions into magnetized conduits.
- Web Gun: Stops platforms in their tracks or sticks Minions to walls.
Minion Logic: In puzzle sections, you are given a specific number of Minions. You must use your gadgets to turn them into fans, bridges, or “balloons” (by inflating them with the Air Gun) to press out-of-reach switches.
Aerial Combat: Occasionally, the game shifts to 3D flight missions where you pilot Gru’s aircraft. You can perform barrel rolls, lock onto multiple targets, and engage in dogfights with Vector’s forces.
“Despicable Cheats”: The game is surprisingly challenging for a “kids’ game.” If you die multiple times in a specific section, the game offers a “Despicable Cheat” that allows you to skip that segment and move on.

The Good

The Bad

Difficulty Spikes: Some platforming sections require pixel-perfect jumps that might be frustrating for the film’s younger target audience.
Short Length: You can wrap up the entire story in about 5–6 hours, though there are collectible “Family Photos” to find for those seeking 100% completion.
