Family Guy: Video Game! (2006) is a chaotic, multi-genre action game that released during the height of the show’s massive post-cancellation revival. It was designed to feel like a “lost episode,” featuring the original voice cast and the show’s signature non-sequitur cutaway humor.
The Plot / Premise: Three Stories, One Quahog
The game features three interlocking storylines that capture the distinct personalities of the Griffin family:
-
Stewie’s Story: Stewie discovers his nemesis (and half-brother) Bertram has built a rival time machine. Stewie must shrink down to “micro-size” to infiltrate Bertram’s base and stop his world-domination plot.
-
Peter’s Story: After a satellite dish falls on his head, Peter becomes convinced that everyone in Quahog is a spy for Mr. Weed. He goes on a rampage to “save” the town from the imaginary conspiracy.
-
Brian’s Story: Brian is framed for “impregnating” Seabreeze (Carter Pewterschmidt’s prize-winning racing dog). He must escape prison and use stealth to clear his name while avoiding the paparazzi.
The Big Change: Genre-Hopping Gameplay
Instead of a single gameplay style, the game switches mechanics depending on which character you are playing:
-
Stewie (Platformer/Shooter): Plays like a classic 3D platformer. You use a Ray Gun to vaporize enemies and solve puzzles using mind control.
-
Peter (Beat ’em Up): A side-scrolling brawler. Peter fights through waves of enemies (including children, the elderly, and the Giant Chicken) using high-impact melee combos.
-
Brian (Stealth): Plays like a parody of Metal Gear Solid. Brian must hide behind objects, wear disguises, and avoid light cones to stay undetected.
-
The Mini-Games: Scattered throughout are “Non-Sequitur” mini-games triggered by dialogue (e.g., “This is worse than the time I was a magician!”). These are short, 5-second button-mashing challenges.
Key Features
-
Authentic Voice Acting: Features Seth MacFarlane, Alex Borstein, Seth Green, and Mila Kunis. The dialogue was written by the show’s actual writers.
-
Cell-Shaded Visuals: The game uses a bold, 2D-inspired 3D look that mimics the art style of the show perfectly on the PSP screen.
-
Fan Service: Packed with references to the first four seasons, including the “Evil Monkey,” Quagmire’s antics, and various obscure background characters.
-
PSP Port Quality: Surprisingly, the PSP version contains the full console experience with very few cuts, though the loading times between the “Non-Sequitur” games can be a bit jarring.
Short Review: A Playable Cartoon
The Good
-
Comedy: If you love the show’s humor, the game is genuinely funny. The writing captures the “mean-spirited but absurd” tone of the early seasons.
-
Variety: Switching between brawling, stealth, and shooting prevents the game from getting too stale.
-
Presentation: The soundtrack and UI elements feel exactly like the TV show’s broadcast package.
The Bad
-
Inconsistent Difficulty: Some of Brian’s stealth sections are frustratingly picky about detection, while Peter’s sections can feel a bit mindless and repetitive.
-
Short Length: The game can be beaten in about 5 to 6 hours, which felt short for a full-priced release in 2006.
-
Dated Humor: Since it was made in 2006, many of the topical jokes and “edgy” references haven’t aged particularly well.
