Final Fantasy II: 20th Anniversary Edition (2007) is the definitive remake of the black sheep of the franchise. While the original Famicom version was notorious for its punishing difficulty and buggy mechanics, the PSP version polishes the experience with gorgeous widescreen 2D art, a remastered soundtrack, and significant “quality of life” fixes that make its unique leveling system actually fun to engage with.

Story: The Rose Rebellion

Unlike the first Final Fantasy, which focused on nameless “Light Warriors,” FFII was the first in the series to feature a character-driven narrative with a heavy focus on war, sacrifice, and political intrigue.

The Plot: The Palamecian Empire has unleashed hell on earth, summoning monsters to conquer the world. Four youths from the kingdom of Fynn—Firion, Maria, Guy, and Leon—are orphaned during the invasion. While Leon goes missing, the other three join the “Wild Rose Rebellion” led by Princess Hilda. It is a dark, emotional journey where permanent character deaths are common, and the stakes feel genuinely high.

Key Gameplay Mechanics

  • No Traditional Levels: You do not earn EXP. Instead:

    • To gain HP, you must lose HP in battle.

    • To gain Strength, you must use physical attacks.

    • To gain MP or Intelligence, you must cast spells.

  • The Keyword System: During conversations, you can “Learn” specific words (like Wild Rose or Mythril). You can then “Ask” other NPCs about these words to unlock new story paths, items, or locations.

  • Soul of Rebirth: A massive bonus chapter unlocked after beating the game. You control the characters who died during the main story as they navigate an “afterlife” version of the world, filling in vital gaps in the lore.

  • Arcane Labyrinth: A PSP-exclusive dungeon that uses the Keyword system. You enter words to generate different floors with unique puzzles and challenges to earn the best equipment in the game.

Short Review: The “Experimental” Classic

The Good

  • Visual Excellence: The redrawn sprites are crisp and vibrant, making it arguably the best-looking 2D version of the game (surpassing even the Pixel Remaster in terms of portrait art and CG cinematics).

  • Fixes the “Grind”: In the original version, your stats could actually decrease (e.g., gaining Intelligence would lower Strength). The PSP version removes this “stat loss,” making it much easier to build powerful characters.

  • Masterful Soundtrack: The rearranged music brings a grand, cinematic feel to the 8-bit themes, especially the iconic “Rebel Army” theme.

The Bad

  • The “Select-Cancel” Removal: Veteran fans might be annoyed that the famous glitch used to level up magic instantly was fixed in this version.

  • Repetitive Puzzles: The Arcane Labyrinth can feel like a chore because it requires multiple runs to see everything, and many floors look very similar.
